Title: Router thinks it's a DIR-615
Post by: cellarboy on June 11, 2009, 07:50:09 PM
Upgraded to the new 1.32 beta and  now every reference to the router model in the admin pages states "DIR-615" instead of 655. It also lists the hardware version as "C3" instead of "A3" and firmware version as "3.01" instead of "1.31"

Any ideas as to why this is? And yes, I'm sure the router is really a DIR-655!!!  :)

Is there a DIR-615 in your network or at a neighbour ?
If you try to connect wireless, be sure to connect to your own SSID. After the firmware update the router has its standard "dlink". Perhaps someone near you has a DIR-615 with factory defaults and you connect to this one.

You are connected via LAN to the router ?
Did you already try a factory reset ?

Did you empty the Browser Cache ?

Good thought. Is your router login password unique? If you haven't changed it, you could be logging in to your neighbor's router who also has not changed their password.

Or did you flash the wrong firmware?

Thanks for the replies.

Nope, there's no other dlink routers nearby and I'm certain I didn't flash the wrong firmware -- I downloaded from the link in the 655 beta code section.

I'lll admit, I'm a little confused. I've tried re-flashing the firmware and it seems to upload, but the router still thinks it's a 615. Boo!

Cool, haven't seen this feature with other brands  ;)

That's sort of like finding a 2 headed, albino rattlesnake. Sounds like a good troubleshooting exercise for the engineers. You just need a volunteer. HANDS?

exactly my thoughts. I think a well documented description of actions taken and 'proof' of this situation are necessary. I still bet on a wrong firmware flash, I cannot imagine that the firmware contains dual code.

Cellarboy, have you ever owned a DIR-615? If so, you wouldn't happen to have an old flash file for it hanging around on your PC and you are accidentally loading it instead of the intended? Just thinking out loud.

Thats cool option too. So we have option to flash any D-link firmware to our D-link stuff? Hmm.. Maybe we can turn our router to something else and after this downgrade our 1.3x devices back to 1.2x boxes.  ;)

edit: like cpu/gpu mods... lol Is there any volt mods to this device? Maybe we can open more pipes in this router and make it work so fast that we just dont see any problems in it anymore.  ;D

btw.
dir615_revC_firmware_301.bin size is - 3 866 648 bytes (3.68Mb)
dir655_firmware_131.bin size is - 1 572 864 bytes (1.5MB)

I dont think its possible to crossflash this things, so you must be logged in some other router, or you will have DIR-615.

Well, ok, I take it from your response that flashing firmware from a different model is not possible. Live and learn - embarassingly, painfully, slowly........Hey, I was just thinking out loud. I didn't see you standing behind me.

It is sometimes possible, but i dont think this is what have happened here. When it is possible, its really fun to turn your budget device to some better with just some "easy" tricks like firmware/bios flash.  ;D

Cellarboy, good luck finding a solution. I'm staying out of this one now. Xinot has reduced me to tears.  :'(

ANy resolution to this one? I am eager to heasr the outcome.  Must be wrong firmware, but logging into neighbors router would have been a hoot, especially if you flashed theirs with another wrong firmware version.

Since the firmware is not dual, flashing the device with 655 firmware cannot lead to this result. It's like white folks having a Asian child when there is absolutely no Asian ancestors or DNA present.  ;)

Well I dont know what to say -- never owned a 615, so would never have any need to have a flash file for that router on my PC, plus, as I said there are no other routers in range so I'm not logged into the wrong router. Oh well, the router still works so I'm not going to worry about it too much.
