Title: can I set up my DNS-320L after a PC format without losing data?
Post by: Tikigod19 on May 20, 2014, 11:47:16 AM
Hi all I recently re-formatted my pc so redownloaded the set up wizard for my DNS-320L.

I just got to the part where it asked me to format and clicked yes.. then thought it maybe wasnt a good idea so cancelled it. Assuming it didn't start formatting and therefore screw up the existing JBOD set up from my previous windows install (it just says initializing when i cancelled so hopefully not too late) is there a way I can get it set up so my pc can see it but without formatting the drive?

Many thanks

There is absolutely no relationship or dependency that exist between the DNS-320L and your PC. If you reformatted your PC HDDs, then this has nothing to do with the DNS-320L which is an independent, self-contained storage device that sits on your network.

If you are trying to see your DNS-320L data on your newly formatted PC, then please see the following posts:

ive tried to map a network drive as best I can without the walkthrough images and I get to the credentials part and then fall down. If I enter admin and leave the password blank it doesnt work and the same if I enter admin and then the password that I assigned earlier when I partially completed the setup wizard

ok i logged in using the web based UI (so I must have been using the right password..) and it got stuck in a sort of formatting loop.. I think caused by starting and abruptly stopping the setup wizard. I'm going to go ahead and format now as it looks like the data is lost anyway (nothing lost as such, just need to leave it all night copying on again)

As you stated in your original post, you initiated the startup wizard and may have done something that caused the DNS-320L HDDs to be reconfigured/reformatted.

Going forward, please keep in mind that any changes to your PC have no impact on the DNS-320L. As I stated earlier, the DNS-320L is a self-contained storage device with no dependencies to your PC. Consider the fact that the DNS-320L is designed to work with multiple PCs on the same LAN (e.g. a LAN with 15 PCs).

The setup wizard is not required to remap the DNS-320L on a new or formatted PC. You simply need to create a network map. The only thing that can cause the map to fail are (1) wrong IP address entered; (2) wrong username/password combination used; and (3) wrong address format used in the network map setup

D-Link made changes to their web server that killed the image links. There are countless guides to creating a network map in Windows is you search the Internet.

thank you for your help, I'll remember next time that when I reformat I don't need to do anything more than re map the d-link. The password wasn't being accepted but I feel that was because of my partial setup wizard mistake. Lesson learned! If only I could get transfer speeds faster than about 17mb/sec it'd be the dream bit of hardware!

If you happen to have a spare switch, you can connect the ShareCenter and PC to the switch and see if that improves performance.  It's worth a shot if you have a spare lying around.
