Title: Connect to the ftp through google chrome ftp://ipaddress:port
Post by: hairymexican on May 20, 2014, 09:05:07 PM
How do you connect to the server via wan with ftp://ipaddress:portnumber? Used to be able to do this, now I cannot.

What changed?

You need to make sure that ...

a) the ftp server can be reached via it's LAN ip address
b) the necessary port forwarding has been configured in the firewall router
c) the WAN ip address being specified in the URL is correct
d) the ISP is not blocking the port specified.

It should be noted that if a non standard ftp port is being used, the DNS-323 needs to be configured for passive ftp and the correct WAN ip address specified in those settings - if the WAN ip is dynamic, and has changed, this may be the cause of your problem.

As far as i can tell i have done all you have asked. Please advise

The ip address specified in http://i.imgur.com/8uPPosw.png (http://i.imgur.com/8uPPosw.png) is 173.175.11.124, so this is presumably your current WAN ip address.

The ip address specified in the DNS-323 ftp page http://i.imgur.com/8EPipWm.png (http://i.imgur.com/8EPipWm.png) is 70.122.123.130 - this should be your current WAN address so I would expect to see 173.175.11.124 here, and you need to check the box for "report external ip in passive mode".

To have that sort of difference in the WAN ip addresses I would like to think you have perhaps changed your ISP or your geographic location.

Ideally your passive port range should not overlap the non standard ftp port you are using and the range chosen also needs to be forwarded to the DNS-323 - I would suggest you use the default port range (there is a radio button for it in the DNS-323 ftp setup), don't forget you need to forward the non standard ftp port (1025) AND the passive port range.

I changed the ports as you requested http://i.imgur.com/jIYCRJb.png this is the wan ip

Only when i use internet explorer do i sometimes and not every time get the window of username and password.  and when i enter the username and password it gives me http://i.imgur.com/1rGC18j.png the cannot connect.  Can we setup team viewer for you to look at my settings perhaps?  Please.  before i added the login security i never had a problem connecting with ftp://173.175.11.124:55536/

Ok so I finally got one dns to access over wan, Now for the other... I now do not understand why one would go and the other not.  I set the same values and even uploaded the 1st one's config to the 2nd one and edited the port and static ip address and I get in internet explorer the login screen but it will not allow me to log in.  Chrome i get nothing.  Ideas?

Assuming that you have only one WAN ip address (as most of us do) if you want to have two ftp servers, you need to use different ports (both for the control port & the passive range) on the second ftp server, and you have to configure the port forwarding in the router accordingly.
