Title: NAS movie stops after a few minutes
Post by: wijo on May 21, 2014, 11:44:04 AM
I have a DIR-868L as router.
I have a Drobo 5N NAS and a WD MyBookLive NAS connected to it via ethernet cable plus an Xtreamer Multi-Console connected as well thru ethernet cable.

The Xtreamer is then connected to my amplifier/receiver which is in turn connected to my smart tv thru HDMI.

I have hoped for a worryfree movie-watching but I have been having problems since everytime I play a movie, it stops after a few minutes.

I tried to isolate it by bypassing the xtreamer and using DLNA on my tv to play the movies from the NAS and it plays longer and even up to the end but when I play a second movie, it stops after a few minutes.

My DIR 868L Hardware Version: A1
Firmware Version: 1.07

Thanks a lot!

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.

Can you by pass the RCVR with the TV directly connected to the router if it has a LAN port or WiFi by chance?

Thanks FurryNutz!

Just to add some more to my issue.
I tried using another media player(Archos, also on the xtreamer Multi-Console) just now and it plays, with pauses every now and then (buffering?) but it doesn't stop. Unlike when I play it on XBMC (on the Xtreamer Multi-Console) which stops totally.

And to answer some of your questions...
I am in the Middle East (UAE)
No, I didn't do a Factory Reset. I will do it now.
Yes, the router was working fine before any firmware updates.
I would like to pass thru the RCVR because it is connected to my home theater system.

Thanks>

Testing of bypassing the RCVR is just to see if there is any differences...

Tried connecting the router via LAN and my WD NAS works fine but the Drobo NAS can't even be detected.

I connected the router via LAN cable and my WD NAS works but stops after some time. Initially it woked and played a movie all throughout but the next movie stops after a while and I couldn't play again after a few minutes.
The Drobo NAS can't even be detected.

Hi, I am not 100% sure I have your set up pictured correctly, but if you have access to a 5 port or larger switch, I would try running everything through that with just one port connected to the router.  I would also try different cabling if possible to rule that out.  A couple of questions, are the videos what are sometimes refered to as high bit rate Bluray rips? Also, was this setup working with a different router?

After doing some more tests, I found out that:

I can play movies throughout if it's 720p or less but it stutters, pauses and freezes if it's 1080p!

Ok so the bigger the data is the bigger pip you need and with less interactions between devices. I would recommend doing as Cable2 suggested, install a Gb network switch between the NAS devices and the TV or streaming device. Doing this will eliminate any un-necessary router and other device processing and then you should be able to stream 1080p directly from NAS to TV with out issues.

I have this similar configuration with mine, switch between NAS and BoxeeBox. Works well.

What do you recommend for that GB network switch?
What do you use yourself?
I just want to get something which is tried and tested so I won't have anymore problems.

Of the Gb class switches, these should work for you.

The 5 port would be good to check out. DGS-1005G

I use a 24pt and 2x8pt behind my router.

Got the DGS-1008D.
Testing it at the moment. So far, so good with Archos media player, though XBMC still fails.

So far I'm happy with the performance on the Archos media player (even if XBMC still fails).
Thanks a lot for your help FurryNutz and cable2!!! Cheers!!!
