I connect my Xbox 360 to my laptop using an Ethernet cable and use Internet Connection Sharing to go on Xbox Live. My laptop uses Wi-fi from my D-link DIR600M wireless router. I have assigned a static IP address to my Xbox 360 and require MAC filtering so that it can connect to the router. The problem is I can't find the option for MAC filtering. Please help.

Link>Welcome! (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48135.0)
- What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
- Link>What Firmware (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=47512.0) version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
- What region are you located?
I'd review the user manual to see if Mac Filtering is a feature on this router. If it's there it would be under Advanced/Filters or Mac Filters. I may not be since it's a basic router. Mac Filtering is not needed for XBL or xbox connections...
I'd review this as well for xbox gaming and recommend using Reserved IP addresses ON the router for xbox and all other devices:
Gaming and QoS for XBL (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42011.0)
Also, IMO, this router is not good for gaming with multiple consoles or game platforms. It should work ok for single game consoles and PCs...If more than 1 console is connected to his model router in the future, I recommend getting into a different DIR series router at some point.
-
I have just the one console so shouldn't be an issue.
Here are the other details:
Hardware version: C1
Firmware version: 3.01
Region: India
I've assigned a static IP address to the Xbox 360 but it's giving me an IP address error every time I try to connect to Xbox Live.
-
Don't use a IP address on the xbox, Set a IP reservation ON the DIR-600 router. Thats all you need. Set the xbox to automatic and it will get the IP addressing information it needs from the router.
Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
- What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
- What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
-
Where can I set the IP reservation? And what IP do I provide in the IP reservation field? Won't the IP address of the Xbox be subject to change (since it has not been assigned a static IP)?
ISP service is DSL.
ISP Modem is Cisco DPQ2160
-
You should be able to set a IP address reservation on the router user Setup/Local Network. Just turn ON the xbox and make sure the Networking is set for Automatic. Power OFF then back ON the xbox. Open the routers web page and go to Setup/Local Network and you should see an IP address for the xbox. You can verify the IP address against the on on the xbox by looking that xboxes network settings. They should be the same. Reserve the IP address seen ON the router. Configure it and save it.
Please review page 18-20 in the users manual for the DIR-600M for reservation instructions...
The ISP modem you have is a cable ISP modem, not a DSL... ???
-
I'm still getting an IP address error saying that the modem/router is unable to assign an IP address to the Xbox 360.
And even if I do reserve the IP address as seen on the router, wouldn't it be obsolete the next time I turned on my Xbox 360? Why would it be obsolete? Because IP address is obtained automatically by the Xbox, it isn't static, therefore it will change the next time. Is my logic correct?
-
Go to the next tab on the xboxes networking settings under config and do a factory reset. It should say OK. Immediately power OFF the xbox, then back ON after 10 seconds. Let it turn on.
Go to the router and check to see if there is a new IP address there for the xbox. Reserve it...
Once you get the IP address reserved ON the router, every time you turn ON the xbox, it will have this same IP address all ways.
-
Go to the router and check to see if there is a new IP address there for the xbox.
You mean on the active client list and see the new IP address for the Xbox?
Btw every time the connection fails and I get an IP Address error, when I go to configure networks on the Xbox, I notice that it's been assigned a 169.x.x.x IP address. I googled a little and found out that it's not supposed to be assigned a 169.x.x.x IP address.
-
Yes, check to see if there is an IP address for the xbox on the router.
Do the factory reset on the xbox, power OFF and then back on. Check the IP address.
You might swap LAN cables between the xbox and router and test.
What model is the xbox? 1st gen or Slim? I presume you are wired to the router from the xbox?
-
No, I'm using my laptop - Internet Connection Sharing.
I tried doing the factory reset, then turning off and on the Xbox but no IP address showed up in the active client list.
EDIT: Yes, I have the old fat xbox
-
Ok, lets pause for a minute here.
ICS shouldn't be used as it will be a bottle neck and slow things down.
Recommended set up for this should look like this:
Cisco ISP Modem>wired to DIR-600M><Wired or wireless connection to Laptop thats connected to router
><Wired LAN cable running from router to back of xbox.
ICS should be disabled on the LT.
-
Yup, that's how it is:
Cisco ISP modem -> DIR-600M -> Wireless to laptop -> Ethernet cable from laptop to Xbox using ICS
Btw,
Something really strange happened. I went to DMZ settings and entered a random IP address "192.168.0.16" and when I tried test XBL connection, it was successful. I changed the DMZ IP address to "192.168.0.190" and it was successful once more. I disabled DMZ and the XBL connection failed too.
Any logic behind this miracle?
-
This is how it should be set up:
Cisco ISP modem -> DIR-600M -> Ethernet cable from Router to Xbox
-
The router is in another room away from the Xbox.
-
Can you get a longer LAN cable or maybe get the MS USB Dual Band WiFi adapter?
I have this on my 360:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox360/accessories/cablesnetworking/Xbox360WirelessNNetworkingAdapter (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox360/accessories/cablesnetworking/Xbox360WirelessNNetworkingAdapter)
Another solution would be to install a D-Link DAP in Bridge mode and connect the LAN cable from the back of the xbox to the DAP. Something like this:
http://www.dlink.com/us/en/home-solutions/connect/access-points-range-extenders-and-bridges/dap-1360--wireless-n-open-source-access-point-router (http://www.dlink.com/us/en/home-solutions/connect/access-points-range-extenders-and-bridges/dap-1360--wireless-n-open-source-access-point-router)
Using the ICS will introduce a double NAT condition on the xbox, even though it connects, you'll have bad gaming performance and experiences and games may not work in this condition. You need to attain a single OPEN NAT condition for the xbox with a direct connection to the router and not the LT.
-
Ok mate will see what I can do... But how and why did that DMZ setting work?
-
It put the LTs IP address in the DMZ and eliminating router processing and some NAT issues.
You need to be directly connected to the router with the xbox, not thru the LT.
Let us know how it goes.
-
If not ICS, is network bridging better?
-
Okay so I turned on the Xbox right now and it failed to connect to XBL despite DMZ being enabled. So changed the DMZ IP address and it was able to connect again.
My first question is: Do I have to change the DMZ IP Address every time I turn on my Xbox so that it's able to connect?
Secondly, I went to Setup -> Local Network and added a DHCP Static IP having IP address 192.168.137.179 and the MAC address for my Xbox. But when I restored Xbox 360 network settings to default, turned it off and back on again and when I ran the Test Xbox Live Connection, it was assigned "192.168.137.119" and NOT "192.168.137.179".
Also, the Xbox is not showing up in my router's active client list even though IP settings and DNS settings are 'Automatic'.
My third question is: Whenever the Xbox successfully connects to Xbox Live, it's Gateway value is always "192.168.137.1". But shouldn't the gateway value be the address of my router (ie 192.168.0.1) ?
-
Okay I tried connecting my Xbox directly to the router and it's working perfectly fine. As soon as I try doing it with my laptop, same IP Address error shows up. You think there might be an issue with Windows 8? I was planning on going back to Windows 7 anyway. Worth a shot?
-
I think that if yoru trying to use your LT to share the internet connection, the LT maybe not passing thru a IP address thats different from it's own.
If you got the xbox connected to the router directly, then you should be good there and use that method and configuration. There no need to do anything on the LT. Connect the LT normally to the router via WiFi and connect the xbox to the router via LAN wired or get you a DAP model bridge and connect the xbox there.
Enjoy.

I've followed instructions from this page: http://support.xbox.com/en-us/xbox-360/networking/win-computer
The instructions I've followed are:
Solution 2: Set your console's IP settings manually
If you receive either of the following error messages, try the steps below:
Can't obtain an IP address from your router or modem
Your DNS server can't resolve Xbox Live server names
Press the Guide button on your controller, go to Settings, and then select System Settings.
Select Network Settings.
Select Wired Network if you are prompted to do so.
Select Configure Network.
On the Basic Settings tab, select IP Settings.
Select Manual, and then select IP Address.
Enter 192.168.0.2, and then select Done.
Select Subnet Mask, enter 255.255.255.0, and then select Done.
Select Gateway, enter 192.168.0.1, and then select Done.
On the Basic Settings tab, select DNS Settings.
Select Manual.
Select Primary DNS Server.
Enter 192.168.0.1, and then select Done.
Select Done again.
Press B on your controller, and then select Test Xbox Live Connection.
But I'm still getting an IP address error
Here is a person having a similar problem: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/43775-42-xbox-moderate-help
The problem is being unable to assign a static IP address to the Xbox whilst using ICS
-
Btw, this is how my router DHCP page looks like right now: http://1drv.ms/1jDYX3w
And this is what my Xbox shows once it's connected to the router after making a DHCP reservation: http://1drv.ms/1jDZ5Qt
As you can see, in the router's configuration page, I have chosen "192.168.0.7" to be assigned to the MAC address of the Xbox, yet the Xbox is assigned "192.168.137.90".
This is what is written in the manual:
DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Control Protocol.
The DIR-600 has a built-in DHCP server. The DHCP
Server will automatically assign an IP address to the
computers on the LAN/private network. Be sure to
set your computers to be DHCP clients by setting
their TCP/IP settings to “Obtain an IP Address
Automatically.” When you turn your computers
on, they will automatically load the proper TCP/IP
settings provided by the DIR-600. The DHCP Server
will automatically allocate an unused IP address from
the IP address pool to the requesting computer. You
must specify the starting and ending address of the
IP address pool.
Therefore, according to the manual, the Xbox should've been assigned the IP address "192.168.0.7" but it hasn't been assigned that address. Instead, it's been assigned "192.168.137.90". And when I test the connection again, it's been assigned "192.168.137.213" and as you can see in the second picture, the gateway is shown as "192.168.137.1". I haven't put these values there. The Xbox fetched them automatically and this is what I don't understand.
The gateway value is supposed to be the address of the router, ie "192.168.0.1" isn't it? Can you explain why this happens?
-
It means the xbox is not connected to the router and is connecting to a different router...Is the xbox directly wired to the back of the 600L router?
-
No, it's on ICS. I had to keep my TV on the bed and shift the xbox to the bedroom so after a while I carried the TV back to the living room and now it's back to laptop using ICS.
Btw, should assigning a static IP using ICS be a problem? Is the Xbox not accepting the static IP's I'm providing because it's connected to a laptop and not the back of the router?
-
I presume that your ICS is the problem and using a different IP address pool from whats being used on the main host router is the problem too, 192.168.0.# and ICS is using 192.168.137.#? ???
Again, this is not a recommended way to connect the xbox to the router. You'll need to directly connect the xbox to the router via wired LAN cable or get into a Bridge so it can connect wirelessly or get MS's USB WiFi adapter. Don't use the LT as the bridge.
Good Luck.

Thanks a lot for your assistance :)
