Title: Dlink 505 Strange Problem
Post by: drdj on May 25, 2014, 10:32:24 PM
Hi,

I have been using the Dlink 505 for over a year now.

I had it set up as a repeater with my Buffalo WHR wireless router which was connected to my ADSL modem (SAM300AX) without problems till last week.

Then my buffalo blew and I had to connect the dlink to the modem directly.

I put it in Router/AP mode, did a reset, connected the ethernet cable from the modem to the Dlink and proceeded with the wizard to set up

It picked up the settings instantly and I was able to broadcast a wifi signal.

However, even though it picks up an ip address and gives me one through DHCP, it won't connect to the internet.

Strange since the modem connects fine as does the laptop which is wired to the modem.

I can see the status as connected on the dlink config page.

To clarify things, my modem is on a 192.168.1.1 ip and the router picks up 192.168.0.1

My phone and 2nd laptop get addresses in the 192.168.0.100 onwards range but can't connect to the internet.

Now, I tried resetting it again and this time I connected it close to the modem and laptop with the modem on and wired into the ethernet port of the dlink. The laptop was obviously disconnected from the modem and was on wifi mode.

It picked up the dlink routers signal and connected with the default password provided.

Here is where it gets wierd!

The laptop connected to the internet via wifi signal without doing the setup again after the reset.

I had just plugged in the ethernet to the dlink and it somehow worked?!?

I then tried to connect it in the other room via another ethernet cable running from the modem there and again it would not connect to the internet.

I know you would think it's a lan cable problem but it allows me to access the modem's config page as well as dlink router page on 1.1 and 0.1 addresses respectively so that must mean the cable is working right?

The modem config page even shows the dlink in the lan pool summary!

But no internet connection. I am using Firmware v1.07 and it was working well with the wireless router before the buffalo died out!

Is it a dns issue? or an ip thing?

Need help please!

Hi
Thanks for the early reply
Let me try and answer your questions
Hardware version V1 Firmware 1.07 Region Asia Pacific : India

ISP
SAM300AX provided by MTNL (internet provider)
I have a static ip with them
Speeds 4MBPS Down 2 up
Checked the cable - tried 2 cables and even connected the laptop directly to the modem to confirm cable works
Its a DSL so maybe i'll try and reduce MTU to 1492
It is on always on mode
The modem does have a built in router but I can't put it on bridge mode. It just doesn't work.
I have put the Ip of the dlink router on the DMZ but still no luck
The addresses of the modem and router are different. Modem is 192.168.1.1 and Router 192.168.0.1

I am bringing the Dlink to work today and will try it there to see if the problem is with the modem or router!

I checked the double NAT situation too but that should have been solved once it was in DMZ right?

Yes DMZ should help the NAT condition.

FW Update Process (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42457.0)

What site was the v1.07 FW received from?

Keep us posted on this.

Hey

Thanks for the prompt replies.

I kind of figured out the problem.

I took it to work and connected it there and to my surprise the dlink worked as an access point with the ethernet cable plugged in even without any configuration? Is that possible?

I had factory reset it before trying so its not that it had the old config in

I actually connected with the default password given with the card that came along with the box.

Anyway I went back home and tried it with all possible combinations and realised it must be a cable fault as it was allowing me access to the modems config page (not dlink but the adsl modem) but no internet access

I went and bought a new lan cable and voila it worked.

I now need to change the entire concealed cabling throughout my house as I don't know where the cable is failing as I even tried to recrimp the ends with the proper sequence

Thanks for the help anyway!
