Title: Ping increases by 20-80 when using DIR-655 Router in League of Legends
Post by: rohit91 on June 16, 2014, 04:13:59 PM
I don't however get this problem when I'm plugged directly using the modem in to the PC. My ping goes from 70 to 90-160 when I use the router and it occassionally freezes everything in plcae for 5 seconds and then suddenly catches up a few seconds later.

Any help would be appreciated

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=47512.0) version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAT6)
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53008.0)
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

cables are fine...unsure of what category they are but they are
ping -f -l 1472 worked. ping -f -l 1474 didn't so I guess it's an MTU of 1500?
Not dsl

Some further notes, this just started happening recently like a week ago. Their server is located in California. Lots of people are posting issues on their help forums but not specifically with DLINK routers. Not using a router and plugging the modem directly to my PC fixes it.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.

If others are seeing this with other non D_Link routers, could a a problem on the services end.

Also your ISP modem maybe out of date as well, ask your ISP if there maybe a updated modem available.

You can try setting up some QoS rules for the game as well:
Gaming and QoS for XBL (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42011.0)
You'll need to find out what ports the game uses.

You can also update FW as v1.37 is available.

QoS off
adv. dns off
unicast off, used to be on
dns relay on
dhcp reserved ip addresses on. Did most
kept firewall on but changed to endpoint
forwarded ports
WISH turned off
WPS turned off
time set

---So it fixed itself midway. 1 thing I know that affected my ping is having a stream on in the background since my ISP does this thing where it limits speeds between 8-12PM in exchange for unlimited bandwidth. Also, the point where I noticed it was fixed is when I added devices to the DHCP reserved list. Could that have affected my ping tht much? Maybe if a device kept reconnecting and connecting (very unsure).
Or there was an issue with the ISP that they fixed during the time I was trying to fix it because I don't think I had some high bandwidth program on in the background for the past few days non stop.

You might set up some QoS rules, one for the game and one for all other devices.

Seem like you've got an idea where the issue is.
