Hardware Version: A1 Firmware Version: 1.02
My 810L keeps dropping it's clients. All clients are on static IP (Auto tried, no success!), and usually it works just fine. I get high speed internet connection, and everything is good, until suddenly one client is denied internet connection. The bars on the PC might be showing that connection is OK, but still, no internet access. The solution is a restart of the router, and then it's OK again.
We have five wireless PC's, and this might happen to any of those. Three are running W8, and two are on W7. None of my older routers have had this strange problem.
Any ideas..?

- Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
- What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
- What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.
- Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
- Enable or Disable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) and test under Setup/Internet/Manual. Disable may help with speed performance on higher speed ISP services.
- Turn off DNS Relay (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=45143.0) under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53222.0) and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual.
- Setup DHCP (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=58017.0) reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives. It's not recommended to use Static IP addresses on PCs.
- Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
- If IPv6 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ipv6) is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only under Setup/IPv6.
- Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPI) to test.
- Enable uPnP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upnp) and Multi-cast Streaming (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multicast) under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
- Turn off WISH (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=40459.0), and WPS under Advanced.
- WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
- Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48695.0) feature. The DST setting is only needed in the NA region. Tools/Time.
Wireless Configurations

- Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
- What wireless modes are you using?
- 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N or AC on 5Ghz?
- Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
- Try setting a manual Channel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_channel) to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions.
- What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Encryption_Standard), so you might want to try TPIK (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temporal_Key_Integrity_Protocol) only or Auto TPIK and AES.
- Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
- Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer (http://www.metageek.net/support/metageek-software-archives/) to find out. How many?
- If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI (http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-features/30969-what-do-80211ns-optional-features-mean-for-you), WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

I've seen this long list before, and I've tried everything (As far as I can see), except from the factory reset. The router has been like this since I bought it, and I've received two different firmwares from D-Link. I did as they told me, but no reset was mentioned. I will now try a reset... Hope it will help.
By the way, this is the third router I have from D-Link, and they have all been with the same settings. I had no problems with the first two.

Would you go thru the list and answer the questions presented. The more we know here and better we get an idea of the situation and your system and we can help you out better.
Could be many things. I have this router too and haven't had any issues since loading v1.02 on it.
Wireless can be effected by many things...

I've done the reset, and are now waiting for anything to happen.
As I said, I've done all the things that apply to my router, but nothing did affect the problem. Wireless can be unstable, I agree in that, but I've never before experienced that a router just cut off one PC, and the others are still in.
I'm on channel 6, as it has the strongest signal, I've tried multi and single band, and frequency. I've tried reserved and auto IP, aso aso...
My internet connection is a very stable (fibre) and high speed, with static IP and, and the DNS is correct.
If the problem was slow speed/bad connection, I would guess that it should be the same for all clients..?
Now I just have to wait and see if any of the PC's will drop out again. Maybe it will happen today, or aybe in three days. There's no pattern in this.

If only one PC is getting cut off and the others are not, then I presume you would need to review the PCs adapter and driver and configuration as well.
Ensure all HW and adapter drivers are up to date.
Some adapters have additional configuration settings that should be looked at. Some adapters even though they support N modes, the driver has this disabled and needs to be enabled in the driver.
I'd turn OFF ALL PCs accept for one. Test some streaming or speeds with the one PC. Then turn on the next one and do the same thing. Take notice of speeds and such. Graduate turning on each PC and test.
Are there any other WiFi neighbors near by? How many are there?
Also test wired LAN connections to make sure thats strong.

Yeah, one or two, not at the same time, and next day the third, and then the first, and so the forth... There's no pattern. We can sit next to each other, and suddenly one of us is without internet. None of these PC's did have any problems with my older routers, nor do they have any problems when we bring them to work/school.

If this was the case, I guess it would either work or not work, not on and off. However, both my previous routers was also of N-standard, and then I had no problems. The problem is present even if I lock the router to G-band.

Graduate turning on each PC and test. The speed is excellent on all PC's. They are all used for different tasks, such as streaming movies and so on

What I think is strange, is that sometimes the bars on the internet icon tells us that we have full connection (five bars), and the message "Connedted to the internet" comes up if I point at the icon, but still there's no connection. I can't even log on to the router. If I then log on to the router from another PC, I can see that the PC without connection, is listed as active in the router. Anyhow, I need to restart the router to get it all up and running again.

Use Single mode N, WPA2 and AES only, auto 20/40Mhz and manual channel 11. Test with 20Mhz only as well.
Also try changing the power level of the radios from High to Medium, found under Advanced/Adv. Wireless.

Factory reset, reload, and FR again was done the other day, and it all went just fine, But today my laptop was at it again. Connected, but no internet, is the information I get. The problem is that it is not connected in a proper way, as I can't log on to the router. I took another (wireless) PC, and used it to log on the router. My first PC (with no internet) was still in the list over conneted clients, only it actually has no connection at all. The set-up is quite simple, so I've done it maually a few times already, but of course it was not at any help.
Use Single mode N, WPA2 and AES only, auto 20/40Mhz and manual channel 11. Test with 20Mhz only as well.
I've tried single mode, but it was the same, and I can't use it on N alone except from testing purposes, as some units don't support the N range. Auto 20/40 is tested, as well ass "all" channels manual.
Also try changing the power level of the radios from High to Medium, found under Advanced/Adv. Wireless.
This one is not tested, but I will give it a go. I only hope it will not affect the range of the router...

Anyhow, if it was a setting issue, I would think that it would affect all clients at the same time, not onlyone or two? The signa strengt is superb, as is the speed, but whoops, all of a sudden one of us is without internet, and the only thing helping, is a restart of the router.

Try single G mode, WPA and WPA2 and Mixed TPIK and AES...
Seem like this one particular PC may be the issue and not the router...

No, it is not the PC. The problem affects all the PC's, only not at the same time... All the PC's in question works just fine at wrk and on school, and they worked fine on the D-Link 655, which unfortunally died on us. ::)
If the solution is to degrade the router to only G mode, or any other form of shutting off functions, it is compareable to buying a 4WD car, and only use ordinary 2WD to get it running. :D
Anyhow, when I tested N mode only, I also did test the other possible settings. I'm starting to think that there's something wrong with my unit, and that I'll have to return it to the seller.

Give a new unit a try or ask the reseller for a different model. Try the DIR-820L
