Hi guys and girls,
I have a slight problem and a question for you which you may be able to hekp me with. I've looked
on the forum to see if there are any other topics that adress both my problem and my question but
to no avail. So here goes:
The problem:
The connection between my laptop (with Gigabit NIC) and DIR 645 (also Gigabit capable) is stuck at
100Mbps (at least, that's what Windows 8.1 x64 tells me). I already changed from a Cat5e cable to a
newly bought Cat6 cable and put the NIC as well as the router in 1 Gbit full duplex mode but this had
no effect. Any idea what could be done about this?
Here's what I also tried:
- The cable that came with my My Cloud gives a gigabit connection (according to the status lights at the back
of my My Cloud). Connecting this cable to my old laptop with a Marvell Yukon Gigabit NIC gives me a 100
Mbps connection speed according to Windows 7. Connecting that same cable to my newer laptop with a
Realtek PCIe GBE family controller gives me the same speed: 100 Mbps.
The question:
I want to do the following since my ISP gave me a Comtrend modem/ router that only supports 10 or 100 Mbit.
I want to use the Dir-645 as a router and WiFi accesspoint for most of my internal network while only using the Comtrend for DHCP duty and connecting my TV and Digital TV decoder to. How do I set this up? Sofar, my actions haven't given me a working system.
Tbis is what I tried sofar:
- The Dir 645 had the following settings: DHCP off, WiFi on
- The Comtrend had the following: DHCP on, WiFi off
in addition, I tried to run the automated internet setup on the Dir 645 while all was connected.

- What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
- What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
- What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
- Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
- What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
- If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/fixing_double_nat.htm) and How NAT Works (http://cognitiveanomalies.com/cisco-nat-how-nat-works/). To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ. Also check the routers DHCP IP address maybe conflicting with the ISP modems IP address of 192.168.0.1. Check to see if this is the same on the ISP modem, and if modem can't be bridged, change the DIR router to 192.168.1.1 or .0.254.

Are you getting 1000Mb connection directly connected to the back of the 645 from the PC? If you disconnect the ISP modem from the back of the 645, do you get 1000Mb with a PC?

About the router
- Hardware version is A1
- F/W version is 1.04A
- I'm located in Holland
About my connection:
- I have a VDSL connection
- My modem is a Comtrend 6373
- My WAN ip is supposedly static
- I get between 10 Mbit and 15 Mbit down and 1Mbit upload speed
- 1) I cannot set the ISP router/ modem to bridged so I would have to put the D-Link in the DMZ,
I'll look into this option. My TV and my digital decoder are also attached to the Comtrend.
Will this influence their operation? Since I run no gaming servers or whatever, can I leave the
virtual servers bit empty?
2) I tried using the Dir 645 with DHCP switched off but this didn't really work. I had set the Dir 645 to
a fixed 192.168.1.100 when I tried this.
I'm getting 1000 Mbit on my WD My Cloud (status lights at the back both showing green) but if I
use the same cable on both(!) my laptops they both(!) only run at 100Mbit. Like I said earlier,
I checked either of them for actual 1000Mbit support: they both do. I also tried the aforementioned
cable test without the D-Link being connected to the Comtrend ISP modem/ router.

Verify that the ISP modem is 100Mb supporting only, you can change the WAN port speed to manual 100Mb. As for the 1000Mb on the LAN side of the 645, it seems that if you are seeing 1000Mb with the WD My Cloud device and your not with the other two devices, it would seem that these 2 devices need to be reviewed for configuration. Check the NIC configurations for each device. Some NICs may have configurations for wired connection speeds, it should be set to auto or 1000Mb if they really support Gb speeds. Refer to the Mfr support site for connection speed support information. Ensure that if any drivers are used for these NICs, update them to the most recent driver.
I have had this same router and all my Gb supporting devices connect at Gb speeds to the back of the 645.

Hi FurryNutz,
The router does only support 100Mbit. I already tried setting the wired connection speed for both
laptops to 1Gbit full duples and tried the same for the Dir 645 so I guess that it has to be some
configuration issue somewhere. The good news is that I did get internet to work through it using
the DMZ option on my router and having DNS and POP3 requests sent to the D-Link. That's half the
battle already won :) Sadly the LAN speed coming from the D-Link is still stuck at 100Mbit. I go and
muck around with the configurations a bit.
Edit: Rejoiced to early... After working for a while, internet is definately not working through the D-Link after trying to switch both the router and NIC to 1Gbit full duplex.

I'd do the following, factory reset, use IE or FF with out any security add-ons and PC security disabled temporarily and reload the v1.04 FW from your regional D-Link site, after it's sent again, do one more factory reset and set up the router from scratch.
Also the use of a external Gb network switch is suggested and recommended. The WAN side can be set to 100Mb on the 645. This won't effect the LAN ports. Any thing connected to the LAN ports should see 1000Mb speeds. It would be a good test to see if a external switch sees the 1000Mb on the 645.

I'll try it. I'll also try to see what happens if I connect my laptop to another verified Gbit switch/ router when I can find someone who has one. I sadly don't have admin access to the Comtrend since my ISP has put an customized firmware on it so I can't change WAN settings.

Yes please let us know what your LT does with a known working Gb switch.
Dang, you might ask your ISP if they can bridge it for you though. Worth asking. :-\
