Title: Xbox One Strict NAT Issue, please help
Post by: mcconn13 on June 24, 2014, 01:40:01 PM
I followed the post that is here http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=58975.0 and am still having problems.

I have 3 Xbox 360s each with an open NAT and one Xbox One with a strict NAT.

My ISP is Clear which is now Sprint, fastest I can currently get. I average 3 Mbps (6 peak) down and 1 Mbps up.
The modem is a Clear Series M (Motorola). This is directly wired to my DGL-5500 and the Xbox One is wired to this as is one of the Xbox 360s.
I have exchanged cables and tried turn off the "Instant On" feature of the Xbox One. This last one opened the NAT for a few minutes.
WPS is off and I have checked the MTU. MTU is default of 1500 works OK but ISP says to use 50. This seems low to me but it's what Clear has told me. I found by using FurryNutz technique a value of 1398 is best.
I have tried the other items that FurryNutz has stated in the post referenced above.

I do have two Port Forwarding applications setup: 1) the main Xbox 360 for Xbox Live that opens TCP 53, 80, 3074 and UDP 53, 88, 500, 3074, 3544, 4500 and 2) the Xbox One for Xbox Live that opens TCP 53, 80, 3074 and UDP 53, 88, 3074. I have turned these on and off in various combinations but doesn't fix the Strict NAT of the Xbox One.

I'm open to suggestions as I've been trying to figure this out by myself for a while by reading this forum.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

Have you reserved IP addresses for each xbox? I recommend starting at 192.168.0.199 and reserve IPs backwards in sequence from .199 the .198 and so on.

You need to remove the PF rules as they are not needed. After removing the PF rules. Ensure uPnP is enabled on the router, then do a factory reset on the XB1 for network settings, turn fully OFF the XB1, then back on after 15 sec. Leave the other xboxes Off at the moment. Check the XB1, does it show OPEN NAT?

My DGL-5500 is hardware version A1 and I am located in WA state.

I removed the PF rules and did a factory reset on the XB1 and still get a strict NAT. I do have UPNP enabled.

I have reserved IPs for everything on our network.

The Clear modem is a Clear Series M (Motorola) Model # CPEi25725.

just as a test go to setting on the xbox one then network.  go to multiplayer connection test and run it.  When you get the message saying "its all good" hold down all 4 top buttons (bumpers and triggers). That should open up a detailed page.  Press A and see if your status changes to open.

Ok I tried that but the detailed statistics still shows as strict NAT.

I just got done with the upgrade. So I'm going to go through FurryNutz suggestions again and try turning off the Instant On feature.

I was able to get it open but again it lasted for about 30 seconds. I did a hard reset and then it was open as shown on the network settings page. By the time it took me to run the detailed network test ran it was strict again. Still no issue with my 360s just XB1.

I use OpenDNS which I think I forgot to mention.

Would you go back to your ISP DNS and either input it manually and disable DNS Relay and or use DNS relay with out manually inputting the DNS and let the router automatically detect DNS. Reset the XB1 after you have applied the new settings and the router reboots. Power off the XB1 for 15 sec then back on. Report your findings...

FYI, Just in from D-Link, there is still issues with XBL1 and behaviors of this router and MS is currently working on this with D-Link. Any issues with XB1 or XBL needs to be taken up with MS. The ball is in there court at this time.

No change in going back to the ISP DNS and turning off DNS relay.

It seems to be open sometimes but it doesn't last.

I'll check in with Microsoft and Xbox Live given your last post.

Thanks to everyone for they're suggestions.

I will. I'm working with Xbox Live support first.

Oh, the detailed network test on the XB1 says it's behind a "port-preserving post-symmetric NAT".

Can you confirm that your getting a Public IP address on the 5500 WAN side? Just need to confirm that your ISP modem isn't giving you a private IP address. Can you check to see if the ISP modem doesn't have a built in router?

I was thinking along the same lines. The "modem" is not a modem, but a cellular (WiMax) gateway. Couldn't find a way to bridge it after a quick look but here is the manual. (http://www.clear.com/cms/download_file/view/690/81/) See page 18 how to disable firewall, but I would suggest calling the ISP and see if the device can be flat our bridged.

I was digging into the WiMax gateway (yes, I think you are correct about this) and found that it also had NAT and UPnP IGD enabled. So I have disabled these.

Making these changes in fact opens the NAT on the Xbox One. No wonder changing the DGL-5500 didn't do anything. Ugh I should have checked the gateway earlier. Well I certainly learned something at the very least.

Once again thank you all for your troubleshooting help and advice.
