Title: Dlink 2740B and Windows 8.1
Post by: Miniphreak on July 06, 2014, 05:58:38 AM
I Have a D-link 2740B router, Version C2, Firmware 2.34AU. it works fine with all my wireless devices except for my new laptop with Windows 8.1, i have tried different drivers on the laptop, and keep getting limited connection, and am suspecting not that it is the router causing the problem, there has not been a Firmware update for many years for this router, since 2010, is this router now obsolete

Cheers

Danny

Does the new Laptop connect if you temporarily disable WiFi Security?

I Am in Australia region, have tried fooling around with the settings that you have listed, and none work, there are 2 other laptops (vista and win 7), 2 ipads, 2 iphones, an android tablet, a netbook (win 7) a sonos music system, and a partridge in a pear tree  :)

i have rolled back the driver on the new laptop until it is the original driver that it came with when it was windows 8, not 8.1, and that seems to work, however, i have to have windows set up to not install new drivers, otherwise it automatically gets the latest driver from Windows update, and the problem returns, this is OK as a temp solution, but not the best long term solution as it hobbles windows update, as you can not set 8.1 to just not update the wifi driver, you have to set it to not update any drivers. so i might be missing out on important updates

When the update appears in the list, can you HIDE that particular update? I know you can in Windows 7 and older version of windows.

Sounds like you found the cause. You might go to the Mfrs web site and see if they have better up to date drivers. I tend to choose Mfr HW drivers over MS drivers as they are better developed then MS drivers.

No you can not remove the update, windows 8.1 has 2 separate sections, one is automatic updates, even with that completely disabled, it still updates drivers, you need to turn off "automatic driver updates" and that only has on or off, no other options, win 8.1 is another step in "protecting" users from themselves and taking away even more control as they seem to do in every new version of windows. I have tried the manufacturers drivers, same problem, seems as soon as a driver is certified as win 8.1 it no longer works with my router, I cant even install windows 7 as there are not all drivers available for the laptop hardware that are win 7 compatible, only win 8+. i think i will just have to suffer with my current setup until i get a new router.

At the moment when I want to install something new, for example, a printer, I have to download updated / new hardware driver, disconnect from all networks, turn on driver updating (you cant even manually install a driver if it is off), install new driver, turn on driver updating, and then reconnect to networks, a real pain in the butt, and the main problem doing it this way is that if there is an actual important driver update for one of my pieces of hardware, i will miss it, because if i am connected to a network and turn on automatic driver updates, it stops working about 2 mins later as it straight away installs new wifi driver
