Title: DIR-655 - Constantly dropping connection on one PC
Post by: SSxSilver on July 22, 2014, 08:21:11 PM
Hello.
My DIR-655 runs wired to one desktop and wireless to 3 laptops + mobile devices w/o problems fine, but no matter what troubleshooting method I use, I cannot maintain a wireless connection to a second desktop. The connection will usually drop every 10-15 minutes. I've used 3 separate USB adapters and 1 internal card all giving the same results.

Not sure what information is needed specifically but things I've tried include:
Single G, Single N, Mixed
Channel Width to 20 Mhz
I'm setup for WPA2/AES
Channel is set manually to 11
Short GI OFF
WLAN Partition OFF

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.

If all other devices are connecting with out issue and this only one PC with testing of different adapters seems to be the only problem, I would think that the problem is with the PC or something with in. What OS is it running?

PC 3rd Party Security Software Configurations

Does the PC stay connected if you turn OFF all other devices leaving the PC the only one ON?

B1 model on firmware 2.10NA.
In Northern California on Comcast Cable.
Modem is a Motorola Surfboard SB6121.
All devices on individual IPs.

There's no FW on the PC, although some programs might have been installed between the last time I checked it. I'll look over another time and try a full reset next then.

Thank you.

I have no idea how it ended up working, but I disabled Windows User Alerts and the connection seems to be stable now lol. Not sure if the issue will return, but it's been a few days and things look okay. Thanks again.

Hi FurryNutz,

Unfortunately I'm back to square one. The connection was very stable for a few days, but would then sporadically drop. I ended up formatting the computer/setting up it's own IP/etc. and the situation remains unchanged. I went ahead and switched to using a laptop for a few days and can now confirm the issue is tied to the wifi. Be it streaming, surfing, idling, the drops still occur.

Just checking over the possible solutions you've posted and the only thing left is doing a factory reset. I'm not sure how much use that would be though, given that I remember having this issue straight out of the box.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

I recommend doing the following:
1. Save router config to file first using IE or FF with all security add-ons disabled.
2. Factory reset the router with all other devices disconnected or turned OFF accept for 1 wired PC.
3. Reload or Update the FW using IE or FF. Just download the FW file to your local wired LAN PC.
4. Factory reset the router and then set up from scratch first and test with out loading the saved config from file. Check to see if any problems are fixed before loading the saved config from file.
