Title: Sharing Hotel Wifi to several devices opens connection to the world
Post by: nordlp on July 26, 2014, 11:43:36 PM
Hi !
This is related to the post "a guy walks into a hotel room" .
I manage to share the hotel Connection to all my devices, but the problem is that the other devices do not need to supply any password. I use repeater mode, and by that the new shared Connection gets the same name as the original hotel e.g. "Hotel-Residance". This means that I open up the hotel wifi to everyone in the hotel using my username and password  received at the front desk. I tried hotspot mode as well, but since I do not know the network key for the hotel router this does not work.I tried to leave blank, but after 90 sec it gives up.

Detalis:

DIR-505 Hardware A1   Firmware 1.03
In the hotel the WIFI is open "unlocked" but as soon as I connect the browser prompts for the user and password received (Sometimes paid for) at the front desk. Think this goes for 90% of hotels.

Step by step:
-Repeater mode -
-From computer connect to my D-Link over wifi
-"Launch wireless setup wizard"
-Manual Configuration
-Choosing the Connection of the hotel
-Not possible now to share with different name or to set a password for the new Connection
-After the router restarts the hotel name of the Wifi is now open for all my devices (Ipad Android Iphone) without the need to supply password.

Not so good!

Upgraded to firmware 1.06
And now in repeater mode it was possible to define own name for the repeated connection and assign a password. It seems however that I do not need to give password on some of my gadgets. But it might be that I have had that password before

Verified with yet another of my gadgets that was not used before, and now it seems to work as expected! Network key to the d-link was required (WPS button also worked)
I can share the hotel connection with my gadgets and all they need to do is to enter the security key to the D-link. As soon as I renew on one device all the other are also on the Internet

Sounds like you got it figured out. Is this in repeater mode or Hotspot mode?

Yes , It works fine. And it is repeater mode. Will verify next time I come to a hotel. But I guess the manual should need to be updated.
