Title: DIR-655 Download speed drops, recovers after power cycle
Post by: murphysf on July 30, 2014, 08:55:45 PM
Hello

I have a DIR-655 HW B1, FW 2.11NA.

Have cable internet service from Astound (San Francisco bay area), this is the same service as Wave Broadband in the Northwest.  My service is internet only 55 Mbps down and 5 Mbps up.

The cable modem that I am using is a Motorola SB6121.

My problem is with my hardwired desktop computer to my router. I test my download speed twice a day,  in the morning when I wake up and in the evening when I come home from work.  I get as advertiser 55Mbps down and 5 Mbps up.  After about 7 days the download speed drops to about 20 Mbps and the upload is actually a bit erratic and is actually higher than normal around 7 Mbps up.

If I power cycle the router the download speed recovers back to its full speed of 55 Mbps down.  About 7 days later it repeats the speed goes down to 20 Mbps down.  This has been going on since I got the router a few months ago.

I have several calls into tech support and they have had me try all kinds of things that didn't help.  They ended up sending me a replacement router and I have had it for 7 days.  I have continued to check the speed twice a day and just last night noticed that the speed dropped from 55 Mbps down to around 20 Mbps down.

Again, all it takes is a simple power cycle of the router and it returns to operating at full speed for about 7 days until the speed drops.

Note:  A few times it has happened I plugged my computer directly into the cable modem, without resetting anything and the speed was the correct 55 Mbps so it seems like it is not my cable service and or cable modem.

Tonight I called again and got a hold of the level 2 support.  The level 2 support tech had me change the wan port speed from automatic to 1000 Mbps, this setting was under advanced - advanced network - wan port speed.

He told me to monitor it and if the speed drops again to call back.  I asked him what the next steps would be and he told me they would forward the case to headquarters to investigate.

I won't know for about a week but have a strong feeling that the speed will drop as I have seen it drop before.

Any ideas what is going on and or how to fix this?

Thanks!

FW Update Process (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42457.0)

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For DSL or Fiber service lines, ensure that the ISP is using good working phone or cable lines to the DSL modem and that the phone lines are filtered correctly. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. I recommend having the ISP service physically check the lines going from the out side to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Any status on this?  ???

Sounds like my exact problem... always resolved after a power-cycle, but quickly goes back down to slow speeds.  Mine does it over a few minutes, though... rather than many days.
