Title: D-Link DSL-2750U Lag problem on games
Post by: HSneak on August 02, 2014, 07:30:54 AM
Hello, i've replaced my previous router (a TP-Link) with a D-Link DSL-2750U, i've done the installation correctly, the internet is working well, no problem at all in anything except on games, where i have high ping, and a big lag, on all steam games, the fact is that with the previous router (the TP-Link) i have no problems with lag, i've switched to it these days to test it out, and the games work perfectly, while i can't play them with the D-Link, and i was wondering if there was some kind of option that makes the games lag like this.

I have configured both routers the same way (well at least the same internet options, i didn't touch advanced settings at all), when i tested the ping with both routers there was NOTHING that used the bandwith and only my PC was working, no upload or download at the time of the test, and it's everytime like this, when i try the D-Link i can't play online games because of lag, so i have to switch back to the other one in order to be able to play normally (of course it's the same connexion with both routers)

My router info :
DSL-2750U
H/W : U1
F/W : ME_1.11
Country : Algeria

Thank you for reading me, hope to find a solution  :)

FW Update Process (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42457.0)

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For DSL or Fiber service lines, ensure that the ISP is using good working phone or cable lines to the DSL modem and that the phone lines are filtered correctly. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. I recommend having the ISP service physically check the lines going from the out side to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Thank you for the fast reply
Well your answer helped me a lot, after reading it I've tried the router on wired link, and the problem disappeared, i have nice ping and everything works fine  ;D
It seems that there is something about wifi, or router placement...
- I'm connecting directly through the D-Link, before trying the wired link, i was using wireless connection between PC and D-Link.
- I've configured the router just after buying it (without touching the reset button) following the CD steps.
- I have never updated the router since i got it already upgraded (ME_1.11).
- About the ISP and modem configuration I don't really get it, and I don't think it's the problem since everything works well with the cable (and only the ping is high when using wireless, download and upload works fine).
- And about the router placement, I've placed it like 4-5 meters away from the PC (in front of it), and there is no device between them (I mean by that, between the two antennas [D-Link and my PC]) and I am wondering if it could be the PC itself that is interfering with the router, anyway since the cable is a good way, I'm gonna use it until I find a better place for the router, if you have any advice on that it would be very welcome.

Anyway thank you very much for your help  :D

Since i don't know how these options work, I have been using the settings like the previous router :
- Mode : b/g/n
- Band Width : 20/40Mhz
- Wireless Channel : Autoscan
- Security Mode : WPA2 only / WPA Encryption : TKIP+AES
- No phones or routers in the area
- For the options you mentioned, I never saw them or modify them, I guess they're on default settings but i'll search for them and try to change every option and test if it works

Well I'm not good at all with all those settings, if you see anything weird in the ones I gave you tell me, otherwise I'll test option per option and see what can cause the problem, by the way the cable is working great :)

Anyway thank you very very much for your help FurryNutz  :D

See if you can change from mixed mode to G and N or single mode N and test.

I recommend using wired connections for gaming however.

Good Luck.
