Title: Router cuts out Internet when streaming/gaming/downloading
Post by: failtolawl on August 13, 2014, 05:47:25 PM
Hello, I am having issues with this router.

Before I begin, this is undoubtedly my router, because my Internet works on the main computer when it bypasses the router.

When I use the internet for a period of time, such as streaming shows on a smart phone, playing an online game, or simply talking on teamspeak. My connection, on these wireless devices, drops for about 5 seconds. On smart phones it means I lose my stream and have to find it again, and on online games it means I lose connection to the server, just to have my connection back after I get dropped.

My Internet does a 20 mb download speed and a 10 mb upload speed with 15 ping. Yet when downloading the graph is very unstable.

When the router struggles to work the Internet it blinks blue, sometimes it goes orange.

There is no devices in between the router and the adapter when this happens.
The router is warm, but not hot.
Firmware is up to date.

I saw the list that is copied and pasted that contains about 50 steps of fixing a router, but I would rather know what the issues could be rather than a guessing game that will take 5 hours of resetting a router and possibly resetting my router settings.

Thanks for your help!

EDIT: I should probably add, it works for about a half hour to an hour after a power cycle, then it resumes.

Hardware: B1
Firmware: 2.10NA
Region: North America
Both wired and wireless, but the wireless devices have the issue.

No a factory reset has not been performed and is a last resort.
There has been no recent firmware updates.

Comcast Cable
SML D3GNU
H/W 2A
Dynamic IP

Speed tests:
Wired: 55 mb/s Down (solid line), 10 MB up
Wireless Computer: ~15mb/s Down (fluctuates), 10MB up

In regards to MTU, the max I can do results in 1500.

Can you confirm the model of your ISP modem?

Is this your modem? http://www.speedguide.net/routers/smc-smcd3gn-res-docsis-30-draft-n-wireless-cable-536 (http://www.speedguide.net/routers/smc-smcd3gn-res-docsis-30-draft-n-wireless-cable-536)

I recommend getting the ISP modem bridged if possible then lets go from there...

Under the WAN ip address field the number is 10.0.0.2

Does that mean it's bridged?

eh, I don't think so, private IPs can be 192, 172 or 10.

Public IP start with number higher than 10, usually and us the following format: ##.##.###.###

I'd ask your ISP about getting a public IP address on the 655 router. You could put that IP address into the modems DMZ and see how it works...

Ok, how can I access my modem and change these settings?

You'll need to consult the modems user manual/ISP to see if it can be accessed. It should be however be aware that some ISPs lock down there modems if you don't own it.

Comcast supports BYOM as well and I would recommend a Motorola SB 6 series stand alone modem if you can't get the SMC bridged or use the DMZ.

Alright, I am going to ask comcast about the bridging thing later today, my WIFI is not sluggish or anything when it works (although I suppose 15 mb when it should be 50 mb is one thing),

it just decides to cut out for a couple seconds or resets its connection when I am using it.

Is there any other settings that could cause the router to reset? It does it when I am streaming things, although it doesn't seem terribly hot, could it be overheating?

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.
