Title: Is my router slowing down the internet?

I have been using DIR 615 for quite some time now. Its Firmware is updated to latest available v5.13. HW Version is E4

Off lately I find that Internet is sluggish when connected thru router, whereas at the same point if I just plug the ISP cable directly into LAN socket of PC it’s pretty good in speed.

All tryouts are done when no other devices are hooked on to router either wired or wireless. I have already done factory reset and reconfiguration of router once. As such router settings are more or less same as before when this issue was not noticed.
It’s bit hard to pin point the source of issue.   Yet to try replacing the LAN Cable between router & PC.

Could this be a sign the router that’s now 3 years old is going bad?
LAN data transfer i.e. sharing between PC & Laptop thru router is fine as well.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For DSL or Fiber service lines, ensure that the ISP is using good working phone or cable lines to the DSL modem and that the phone lines are filtered correctly. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. I recommend having the ISP service physically check the lines going from the out side to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.

3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Still have not found a clear solution. If I plug the PC LAN cable to LAN2 socket instead of LAN1 on router, there’s a marginal improvement.. but not very conclusive.

Is there any way for ISP to know what type of device is connected to it? Is it the router or the PC?  I notice different series of IP Address getting assigned i.e. WAN IP of Router has entirely different series than what gets assigned to PC if it was directly connected to ISP, bypassing router

Yes certainly...

What region are you located?  - Asia
Has a Factory Reset been performed?  - Yes
Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?  - Yes have re-uploaded the firmware now (v 5.13) and  reset was done both before and after
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?  - Cable
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?  - Info not available (Modem is not located in my apartment. It’s placed at some common area by ISP and shares multiple connections across users)
What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have? – Info not available
Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. – May not be feasible as modem is not owned by me and not in vicinity
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. – So far no input from ISP

 
 Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS -  Yes QoS Off
Turn off Advanced DNS Services – Turned Off
Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP. – Dynamic IP
Enable or Disable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) and test under Setup/Internet/Manual. Disable may help with speed performance on higher speed ISP services. - Not sure. Could not locate this setting on DIR 615
Turn on DNS Relay  - Yes On
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. – Yes already set
If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only under Setup/IPv6. – Yes it’s Local
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Yes Endpoint Independant
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.  – Yes Enabled
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced. – WPS already disabled
Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. – Yes NTP server ntp1.dlink.com

Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones – 2.4 Ghz but not in the same room at least
 WiFi APs near by? - 1 with fair signal and other 2 are very weak

Turn on DNS Relay  - Yes On - Test with this OFF.


Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones – 2.4 Ghz but not in the same room at least - The 2.4Ghz phone could be a source of interference with this model router. Test with this phone OFF and see what happens.

Found Unicasting option but that's  under Dynamic IP net connection. In my case while WAN IP is dynamic, ISP has provided PPPoE connection with username/password. So seems Unicasting option can not be configured.
It could be some issue at ISP end which may be difficult to trace otherwise.

Ok, probably not an option on a PPPoE connection then...

One test you can do is to take the router out of the equation and do directly into the ISP modem to see if you notice the same slow down.

I would take the router to a friend, family or neighbors to see if the problem follows the router as a test.
