Title: dir 868 L rev B details
Post by: koroziv on October 09, 2014, 09:54:02 PM
I noticed while browsing for firmware on dlink site that I'm asked if I have rev A or rev B.
I would like to know what is different in rev B, because it uses a different firmware.

From which site did you see this?  ???

There is no Rev B here in the NA region.

http://www.dlink.com/ro/ro/support/product/dir-868l-wireless-ac1750-dual-band-gigabit-router
Select the download tab, you will be asked what revision, chose A then click select, you will have the 1.08b07 firmware to download. For B you have 2.00b07.

Interesting. Each region does there own thing on some level so I guess that region is doing a Rev B. Looks like western EU as well is supporting it.

I don't know if the NA region or any other will be following. They may. It's been a solid router, accept for PPPoE speeds I guess. I don't use PPPoE here and don't have Gb speed on ISP here yet.

I'll ask and see if I can get any info...

Thank you in advance for any info you can find about this. As you know from my other coments here I'm not happy with this device, I want to find out if Rev B fixes some of my issues (native ipv6 and gigabit speed with pppoe). If those two are fixed I'll request a Rev B replacement, not sure if I'll get one but at least I will try.

I'll post if I get something. You might want to phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask about the Rev B while we wait.

Thanks. I gues there are some hardware changes to, being a hw revision, and I'm sure that we can't use the new firmware interface on our Rev. A model.

Ya I wondered if we could put Rev B on a Rev A. Would not be wise to attempt.  ;)

Thanks; but this dosen't make sense to me :(
If the hardware is the same then why give a new hw revision ? And why we don't have the new GUI also on rev A1 ? If there are no hardware changes I don't see a reason for different firmwares. Or at least they should let us know that we can use the new GUI firmware on rev A with no issues. I don't see a problem IF the hardware is the same.

I presume most of that is company confidential and we probably will never know the specifics.

The only way that makes any sense : we are not going to let the people know that we sold units with faulty hardware, it will cost as a lot. I don't say that is the case here, just that it doesn't make sense.
I think they have to present detailed hardware info, it must be a law regarding that.

Just because a Mfr comes out with a follow on Rev doesn't always necessarily mean HW is faulty. Maybe they improved or added a feature that could not be added to the prior Rev. There are many factors that go into design and development of HW. Maybe they went with a different chip mfr or WiFi chip mfr. Anything is possible. They never make it public knowledge what HW specs maybe however we'll never know the true specs and code since thats always company IP and confidential.

Over all, this router has been a great router. Solid and working great for me and others. Time works for me too.

Just installed my new 868L rev b.

Updated from my trusty DIR-655, which has worked a treat for me, for many years.
Got a good deal, I think. About 100 euros including postages.

Configured it, updated to latest FW (201b05) and seems to work beautifully (Knock on wood).
Seems they have removed the USB 3 setting? I suppose it made more problems than anything else. At least I cannot find any setting for it anymore (and would have disabled it anyway...)

They may have since USB 3.0 was a problem at some point.
Is USB 3 supported on the Rev B? If so, maybe it's set to auto detect USB 3 connections. And maybe is not effected anymore.

Sorry, this unit isn't available here in the USA. Canada and EU it is.

Hope it works well. The new UI is like the 880L/890L. A bit more simplistic and some users don't care for it. Not sure how long the old UI will be around. I presume D-Link will be going forward with this new UI on all there new router products.  ::)

It's quite a bit simpler UI, yes. And I kinda miss the "old one", been using it for so long, that got kinda used to it ;)
Still, I find the new one more intuitive and prettier, though I'm not as happy about the missing settings.... Seems to be a trend nowadays (Kaspersky, Android UI changes...)
More complex settings should be available to those, who want to tinker with all the settings. Like an "Advanced mode" or something...

Ya I agree, it would be nice to have a novice and advanced mode for the UI. D-Link is aware of users concerns. Not sure when or if any thing will change. I presume it would take a bit more memory and configuration to enable two mode UI like that while containing the additional features. Will see I guess. Over all the 868L has been a solid router. I'm on my 2nd 868L now. Gave my 1st away as a gift. I ran out and found another one. Great routers.  ;D

Let us know hows yours does. Visit the forums when you need. Hope you enjoy.  ;)

Maybe people are getting simpler and have shorter tolerance for learning things  :P
And even I know, that I don't want to go back to DOS days of configuring boot diskettes xD
Might be one reason, why I haven't bothered to try different Linux distros nowadays, as I did constantly over a decade ago xD
But agreed, have installed quite a few DIR-655's for friends and even on a local registered association, they've been working fine.
I use to visit these forums quite regularly, to read what is happening on D-link world :) So I will surely give my opinion sometime in the future.

Ya I have all 3 Revs of the 655 now. Good solid routers. Work horses for sure. The 868L is a good work horse too.

See you again soon. Enjoy.  ;)
