My problem:
The router works fine from LAN, but very badly from wireless: clients can connect to it, but the handshake takes long (>30s) and then everything is painfully slow. Connection drops frequently. if I reboot the router, the wireless works fine again for a few minutes, then stops working. Timeouts, hosts unreachable. With many hiccups I still get some data, but almost unusable.
The log shows many of these errors: kernel:

Some details on the configuration:
DSR 500N
Hardware Version: A1
Firmware Version: 1.09B58_WW (The router says this is the latest, but the latest appears to be 1.09B61_WW. Any idea about this?)
Wireless:
SSID is customized
Broadcast SSID: Yes
Security: WPA+WPA2
Encryption: TKIP+CCMP
Authentication: PSK
Operating Frequency: 2.4GHz (no 5GHz available)
Mode: (tried n+g, b only, g only)
Channel Spacing: (tried 20MHz, 20/40MHz)
Control Side Band: (tried Lower/Upper)
Channel: (tried them all, including automatic). WiFi analizer showed no interference in at least some of the channels tried
Default Transmit Power: 31 dBm
Transmit Power: 12 dBm
Transmission Rate: BEST(Automatic)
Advanced Wireless: all default values
WDS: Disabled
WPS: Disabled
WMM: Disabled
Attack Checks: tried to switch them all off, no influence.
Wireless phone in office: Philips D205 Duo (1.9GHz). Tried to switch it off, no influence.
Any clue?

- Has a Factory Reset (http://blog.dlink.com/what-is-a-reset-button-when-should-i-use-it) been performed?
- Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
- What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
- What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Wireless Configurations

- Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
- Ensure any devices with WiFi adapter drivers are updated.
- Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
- Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer (http://www.techspot.com/downloads/5936-inssider.html) to find out. How many? Use v3, its free.
Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Answers to your questions:
- II'm located in the Netherlands.
- After purchase, we upgraded the firmware and then configured the router. No factory reset performed. The wireless was never tested before the firmware upgrade, and it never worked properly
- The ISP (commitment.nl) is located in our same building, there's no modem between us and them.
- The default SSID had been changed upon installation
- Device WiFi drivers are all updated - btw the problem shows up with any device we tried
- We have a cordless house phone, Philips D205 Duo, which operates on 1.9GHz. I also tried to remove it, no difference.
- We are in an office building, so yes, there are other WiFi routers in the area. I see 12 at this moment. I have already tried to use unused channels. In fact, I have tried all of them. No difference.
- Router placement: The router is placed inside a small wooden closet, about 1m from the floor, together with 3 servers. I can try to move it out, but honestly I would find it very odd if this were the cause.

I recommend following this and re-applying the FW:

Please do the factory reset before sending the FW file, then once more again after then set up from scratch.
- Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
- Try setting a manual Channel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_channels) to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions.
Possible you could be experiencing some WiFi congestion having 12 other WiFi neighbors around you.
Please place the router outside of the wooden cabinet while testing.
