Title: slow download speeds ?
Post by: darrellpope on November 28, 2014, 10:18:19 AM
i have a dir-850l connected to a virgin media suphub connected as modem only and have been using the router for a few months with no issues all ways get between 80 - 100 meg on wireless and 162 meg download on wired.
yesterday seemed to have very slow downloads on wireless and put down to my provider.
tried again today and still getting really slow download speeds ? 0.5 meg down and 12meg up the upload is about right for my provider after rebboting everything still got the same speeds.
next step was factory reset the router and got exact same speeds 0.5 up where is was getting 80+ so thought a firmware update might be needed i was on revision a firmware 1.05 so downloaded the newest firmware 1.10 restarted and got the same slow speeds ?
not sure where i ca go from here as im not sure what else to check ?
any ideas on what to lookm at next

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

it is hardware version a1
running firmware 1.10
located in the uk
internet provider is virginmedia 160meg down and 12meg upload
modem is a vrgin media superhub 2 moodel vmdg485 which is connected in modem mode
all cables have been check and are ok
router is located centre of the house on top of kitchen cabinet and away from any other electrical devices
the wired connection coming from the router to the pc's have all 162meg download and 12meg upload so speed is good but connected to wireless i only get 0.5 meg download and 12meg upload which the upload is correct.
tried changing channel width to all available and seen no difference ?
router as been configured and running perfect for a few months and yesterday the wireless only download  speeds and gone to 0.5 meg and usually get 80-100 meg on download wireless
could it be a fault with the router ? and factory reset both the router and the cable modem with no joy

tried manual channels on 2.4GHz  6 , 11 and 13 and also g only , n only then mixed
tried manual for 5.0 GHz on channels 48 an 36 and on n only , ac only then mixed
got connected iphones and ipads only all other consoles computers and tv's are connected by wire which is ok
there are also about 4 additional wireless devices that my iphone and ipad picks up in the area
dont have any cordless phones connected.
also got wpa-personal securtiy on

its strange that this as worked flawless for a few months and now just lost the download speed on wireless only everything else is perfect ?

Can you verify that your ISP modem is working in modem mode only and no other wireless signals from coming from it?

I recommend downloading the FW file from your regional D-Link support site and do a factory reset, send the .bin FW file, do one more factory reset again then setup from scratch. http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/home-solutions/connect/routers/dir-850l-wireless-ac1200-dual-band-gigabit-cloud-router (http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/home-solutions/connect/routers/dir-850l-wireless-ac1200-dual-band-gigabit-cloud-router)

Can you post a picture of your InSSIDer results? Adding Screenshots In A Post (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=58120.0)

Downloaded the newest firmware for the dlink router which is 1.10.
Went back to scratch and disconnected the router and put the super hub back to full modem / router mode.
This is the strange thing used speedtest.net and get 162meg download on wired connection tried a differnent speediest and only get 0.2 meg?  Also tried to download a file and that also only downloads at 0.1 - 0.2 meg which is what the speed is on wireless so still getting same problem with just the virgin super hub
Got a engineer coming out tomorrow morning after a 2 hour phone call and them taking over my PC and still couldn't sort it they think it may be the modem.
Strange why speedtest shows 162 meg and every thing else is slow will have to wait and see what they find tomorrow.
But thanks for all the help

Just a update  Virgin media  service engineer  was due today after a 2 hour call yesterday and them trying to solve the problem with access to my pc and couldn't find any issues and suspected the modem in the process last night they updated the Virgin superhub.
Got a text at 8 this morning from Virgin media saying the service call as been cancelled as there was a fault in the area which they could of said at the start of a two hour phone call yesterday.
Any way the wireless speeds and coverage from the superhub is now almost the same as the dir-850l and I'm quite happy with it for once.
So now the question is do I put the dir-850l back in or stay with the superhub ? Or is there any way of turning this device into a ap ? As I have a wire in the top bedroom at the back of the house if this was possible would give me really good coverage at the bottom of the house.

Sounds like it was the ISP service huh? Glad they figured it out.

You can use the 850L as a router or you could use this method:  Turning a router into an AP. (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=40856.0)

The router will work in either mode.

Enjoy.  ;)
