Title: DIR 905L lags out constantly.
Post by: allfinete on November 29, 2014, 04:56:34 PM
Hello.

I'm looking for help on a issue I've been having for a couple of weeks.
Basically, every once in a while the connection lags out for a few seconds and comes back, sometimes it drops the connection on all the programs in all the computers in the network. Skype lags constantly.
This problem is happening on my main computer, which is directly wired to the router aswell.
This is the message log, I don't understand it very well, but it looks like it detects attacks from random IPs and drops some packets, the thing is, most times it even thinks that the DNS server is doing it. I've tryed different DNS servers and it didn't work.

Code: [Select]
Time and Date Message
Nov 30 00:54:51 Port Scan Attack Detect (ip=199.108.50.120) Packet Dropped
Nov 30 00:54:51 Per-source ACK Flood Attack Detect (ip=199.108.50.120) Packet Dropped
Nov 30 00:54:51 Whole System ACK Flood Attack from WAN Rule:Default deny
Nov 30 00:54:51 Whole System UDP Flood Attack from WAN Rule:Default deny
Nov 30 00:54:51 Whole System SYN Flood Attack from WAN Rule:Default deny
Nov 30 00:53:51 Per-source ACK Flood Attack Detect (ip=12.129.206.130) Packet Dropped
Nov 30 00:53:51 Whole System ACK Flood Attack from WAN Rule:Default deny
Nov 30 00:53:51 Whole System UDP Flood Attack from WAN Rule:Default deny
Nov 30 00:53:51 Whole System SYN Flood Attack from WAN Rule:Default deny
Nov 30 00:52:51 Per-source ACK Flood Attack Detect (ip=12.130.244.193) Packet Dropped

I've looked around and noticed that other people also have this problem, but didn't find a proper solution. Thank you.

Hello, thanks for the answer.

The hardware version is B1.
The firmware version is
I'm located in Rio Grande do Sul, which is at the extreme south of Brazil.
The computer is connected direcly to the router, wired.

My ISP is called "Net Virtua", it is cable.
The modem information:
Code: [Select]
Model Name: SBV5122
Firmware Version: 22.2.3-SCM-10
Vendor Name: Motorola
MTA Firmware name: SBV5122-22.2.3-SCM-10-SHPC
Boot Version: 8.4.7
Hardware Version: 4
BCMA Software Version: 45.83
MIB Version: II
GUI Version: 1.0
VxWorks Version: 5.4
Serial Number: 308564110800027503020017
Firmware Build Time: Apr 20 2011 06:06:14
The ISP uses dynamic WAN IP.
The speed is 10 Mbits/800Kbits (Up/Down).

EDIT: By the way, the problem only occurs when connected through the router, when connected directly to the modem the connection is flawless.

I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For DSL or Fiber service lines, ensure that the ISP is using good working phone or cable lines to the DSL modem and that the phone lines are filtered correctly. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. I recommend having the ISP service physically check the lines going from the out side to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.

Do you have QoS enabled and configured?
Your ISP Speed package maybe slow enough that the VoIP data is getting lagged out and may need some QoS rules to help maybe.

I tryed checking the configurations you suggested, some of them simply don't exist on this router page.

I also checked the cables, there is one cable that comes from outside, which is then split in two, one goes to the modem, which controles the telephone and internet, and the other splits again to different TV spots. Do you think that asking the ISP for an additional cable (internet only) should solve the problem?

I recommend having the ISP check the signal and if they can get a dedicated Internet line. Make sure that splitter is of good quality. Splitters can cause loss of signal or noise on the line.

I'll have a look at your user manual and see what differences there are and make some recommendations if I can.

Is Traffic Control enabled and configured on this router?
http://www.dlink.com.br/sites/default/files/product_download/Configuracao_de_Controle_de_Trafego.pdf (http://www.dlink.com.br/sites/default/files/product_download/Configuracao_de_Controle_de_Trafego.pdf)

Test with it disabled then enable it and configure it using the instructions in the PDF...

Traffic Control was disabled, I tryed enabling it and the problem still persists.
I've read somewhere else that the number of open connections could be the issue, where the router blocks some of those, but I didn't manage to find the options to change that.

Ya there isn't any options to change how the router handles the connections.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

Well, I tried contacting the local support before. I contacted them in early November through phone contact. They told me to ask for help on their online chat, the chat then told me to email them...
Once I sent the email, it took them 8 days to reply, with mostly useless information, it seemed like they didn't even read my email. After over a month of useless chatting with them (they don't even seem to know what signal to noise rating is), I asked for a refund and that I would send them the device. They denied it and told me to go on store that handles technical dificulties in DLink hardware in my region.
I went twice. The first time there were no technicians and only the phone lady was there. The second time, they opened up the device and said "well, it should work". Tried setting up a local network through it and it failed as it failed in my house. They said that it was problem on their internet provider and that it happens with any device, and that it should work on my house. The thing is, they tried to charge me R$ 150,00 for assistance (which is around 50-60 USD).

So yeah... DLink costumer service is pretty incompetent in my country. I feel like a have no options other than getting another model and dealing with the cost of this malfunctioning product.

You might ask for level 2 or higher support and see if you can get better help.

Good Luck.
