Title: ScanDisk failed but no visible problems
Post by: brucehvn on December 01, 2014, 02:56:33 PM
I have a DNS-323 HW C1, with FFP installed.  When I run the scan disk tool from the UI, it comes back as "FAILED" after about 20 seconds with no other information.  There are no amber lights on either disk on the front panel and I'm not experiencing any data issues.  I've tried to run the fsck from FFP in "don't fix" mode, but it can't really do anything because the drive is mounted.

Other than pulling each disk and checking it with the manufacturer's software, anything else I can try to see what the issue is?

Scandisk appears to be a way of doing a quick SMART test on the drive, maybe you should be running whatever FFP has for SMART testing instead.

Do not confuse Scandisk on the DNS-323 with Scandisk on windows, they do totally different things.

I installed the smartmon tools for FFP and every test I run says everything is fine with both drives.  So, I'm still not sure what the issue is.  I'm backing up the drive to an external drive and will keep it up-to-date in case of some failure.

If it has caused you to make a backup of your data then it is a plus.  We see too many people come here because something has gone seriously wrong and they need to restore from backup and they don't have one.

What you are seeing is maybe, I say maybe because we haven't seen that before, caused by some strange interaction between the UI and FFP.  If the SMART test from FFP give the all clear then I would accept that as being correct, just don't stop making a backup though.
