Title: DNS-320L USB port to PC ?
Post by: bushmaster2000 on December 09, 2014, 08:15:53 AM
I can't seem to find a good answer to this question.  Can i take the USB port on the front and plug one end into the 320L and the other end into a WIndows Vista laptop and use the 320L as a mirrored USB drive when I don't have a network like when I travel?  I'm not interested in trying to do a cross over network cable or carry a micro-switch.  I just want to be able to plug in with USB and get access to the folders.  Can the 320L do this?

So 52 reads and no one knows the answer to this?  No one could try on their 320L to plug it into their computer via USB?  D-Link support can't provide an answer?

Because it is impossible. This is a hub port, you can use it to connect external usb flash or usb disc. There is no way to use the NAS as an external disc for other PC - the same way you can test to connect two PCs by their USB ports - it will never work.

Ok ... well that's an answer to my inquiry, thanks.

I assume you can use a cross over cable then and connect it directly to a laptop's network port without a switch?  That works with most devices so i would assume the 320L is no different.

If you set up static IPs on the DNS and PC first, a cross over cable could be used. However a router or wireless router would be good to have.  ;)

For USB, this is no matter of the cable. It is a problem with the type of port.
