Hi,
my DNS 325 is dead, i think due to a power surge.
Although I have had a few dlink devices, I was looking for advice on the following.
1. The drives in the device were configured as raid 1. If I purchase another NAS (not DLINK), will the drives be readable?
2. As you all have experience across a number of devices, what do you currently recommend for home use?

The ShareCenter product line formats HDDs using Linux. If you replace the DNS-325 with an identical model, then you should be able to simply drop the HDDs into a new unit without issue. However, D-Link has made changes to the filesystem with subsequent ShareCenter models, so a RAID array configured in a DNS-325 may not be compatible with later models. That said, compatibility of your DNS-325 RAID-1 array with third party NAS is really dependent on the make/model. You'll have to conduct some research to that end.
An alternative approach is installing and mounting the DNS-325 HDDs in a Windows PC and then copying the data to a new storage location or new NAS. The following thread describes free software products that other ShareCenter users have successfully used: DNS-325 - Data Recovery (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=41398.0)

So if I want to upgrade my DNS 321 to a newer DNS 325 I won't be able to just move my two raid 1 drives into the newer DNS 325?

Correct. You will need to let the DNS-325 reformat the HDDs and then transfer your data over.
Do you already have a backup of your data? RAID-1 provides redundancy but is NOT a backup.
