Title: Garmin USB-drive not recognized
Post by: raini55 on January 25, 2015, 02:34:28 PM
Hello,
I'm connecting a Garmin GPSmap64 to the DIR-505 but only the MicroSD-card is recognized but not the internal drive. Even if I remove the MicroSD it does not recognize the internal drive. When connecting the GPSmap to my MAC it does see both drives, the internal and the MicroSD. Any idea?
Thanks!

Sorry for the delay!
Here's what you asking for:

Hardware Version : A2
Firmware Version : 1.09
My region is Netherlands

The internal memory of the Garmin: MS-DOS (FAT32). The size is 4 GB - NOT WORKING
The external micro SD MS-DOS (FAT32). The size is 32 GB - WORKING

Sounds like FAT32 is working.

Can you test NTFS?
You may need to review this:

Not the same model router however may use similar configuration...

Unfortunately not! The internal memory is the device-memory of the Garmin which I'm unable to format. As the format (FAT32) is not the cause of the problem, what other criteria should I take care of? It appears that on a similar device, the D-Link 506L works with the Garmin-device. Unfortunately I was unable to purchase this device as it was not available anymore. Probably it is discontinued by D-Link. What is the difference between the 505 and the 506L?

Thanks!

Possibility there is a incompatibility issue between the 505 and the Garmin device.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

I will do that. But maybe this helps: The drive that does not show up has no MBR (Master Boot Record). The other has. This is the only difference I could find. Does anyone know if this is a restriction?

That maybe the issue. If the one drive had the MBR and works and the other doesn't and fails to connect, then we can presume that maybe the cause. I presume that the drive can't be formatted or modified in any way?

Hello,
Thanks! In the meantime I found a German pdf from D-Link stating that non MBR-formats are NOT supported. So this is officially. But the good news is that I found an alternative routing-software at "Open-Wrt" that also has support for the DIR-505. I installed it and this solved my problem. The Linux-based software does support the non MBR-format. Problem solved!
