Title: LAN Backup using Windows 7 hostname
Post by: tgould on February 14, 2015, 10:48:52 AM
I'm pretty sure I was able to do this years ago with a Windows Vista machine, but have not been able to do so with Firmware 1.03 and Windows 7 machine. I want to use LAN Backup to backup documents, pictures, videos, etc from my Windows 7 machine to my DNS-325.  The only way I can make it work it to specify the IP address of my Windows 7 machine in the URL (e.g. \\192.168.1.70\Users\<MyUserName>\Videos).   This works for a bit, and then fails because I have my Windows 7 machine set to use DHCP for its IP address. Eventually, it gets a new IP address.
Is there any way to make the DNS-325 use the Windows 7 machine's hostname? They are both connected to the same switch and router. Is my only option to switch the Windows 7 machine to static IP?

Configure your router to Reserve an IP address for the Windows PC. Using this approach, the router will make sure the Windows PC always has the same IP address. The router will identify your PC by the MAC address on the PC network card and always assign the same IP address even after the PC reboots or is removed/re-added to the network. Your router web UI should have an option for configuring IP address reservations.

The FAQ below is written for the ShareCenter but applies to your PC as well.
