Title: DIR-868L Upload Speed Severely Slow!
Post by: emsilva on February 22, 2015, 10:25:06 AM
This is a brand new router, doesn't have 1 week yet. This is the scenario:

I have a 20M Down/0.5 UP connection. Without the router, if I connect through PPOE directly through a laptop I get the full speed down and up.
If I use the router, doesn't matter if using wireless (5gz or 2.4gz) or ethernet, my upload stays very low. Most of the times around 0.03-0.05 Mbps and sometimes as "high" as 0.20.

I tried a handful of configuration changes. I tried:
-  updating the firmware to the latest version (came in with 1.08, changed to 1.09) performed a hard reset, moved back to 1.08 while performing a hard reset before and after the downgrade.
- Several restarts
- Several different clients, again, both wired and wireless
- Several IP ranges
- Enabled QoS and then disabled QoS
- Enabled and then disabled multicasting for Ipv4.

My network has around 15 devices among Apple TVs, iPads, iPhones, Macs and PCs.

Any other suggestion on what could be causing this scenario? Appreciate the help.

Thank you,

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For DSL or Fiber service lines, ensure that the ISP is using good working phone or cable lines to the DSL modem and that the phone lines are filtered correctly. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. I recommend having the ISP service physically check the lines going from the out side to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

Hardware Version is A1
Currently it has 1.08 Firmware loaded on it (it came with 1.07, I updated to 1.09 and downgraded to 1.08 while troubleshooting)
I'm located in Brazil.

Regarding Internet Service Provider and Modem Configuration:
WiMax to my condo central and ethernet from my condo central to my house. I connect through PPoE.

Again, if I bypass the router I get my full upload speed. Doesn't matter if using wireless or wired through the router... my upload speed is halted.
If I use an Apple Time Machine I also I get my full upload speed.

Is there anything else I can try? What is the process to get a replacement or reimburse initiated if not?

Thanks,

Yes, reset before and after. I'll do a move back to 1.09 and reset before and after gain.

My ISP is 20Mbps down, 0.5Mbps up.
Its always ON.
QoS is disabled. I can't find anything related to Traffic Shaping on the router configuration.

If after the move back to 1.09 it stays on the same, is there any other suggestion?

Its a little upsetting to spend so much money on a router and have it just fail at its basic usage test.

If you enable QoS and set the Uplink speed to 2Mb, does the speed maintain when tested?
Disable ALL other devices or turn OFF devices and connect 1 wired LAN PC to the router and test with this configuration.
What site are you testing with ?

It's possible that if this fails, that the router is just faulty and needs to be RMAd. I have this one and the upllink works well here for me.

I have two and they both give me my full upload and download speeds. Also this router is very cheap for the features it offers. Before it I had an Asus black diamond which was much more expensive. Also was always giving me problems.

I've had some uplink problems that were caused by QOS not supporting uplink speeds over 20 Mbps. Switching off QOS ramped me up to over 95Mbps uplink using this router, so 0,5 M should be no problem.
QOS worked fine in the sense that I got the connection speed that I configured it to. Did you try switch on QOS and set the uplink speed to the true connection speed of 512 kbps (taking about 20 seconds to upload a 1MB file) Maybe some miscommunication between the condo-modem (is this a modem or does it have router functionality?) causes the lack of uplink speed, and maybe you can overrule it this way.

You mention that you have a slow uplink, or even that the "uplink speed is halted". Can you put numbers on this? speedtest.net?

If you had a different Mfr router which experienced problems and you see problems with the D-Link router, this maybe an indicator that your environment and configuration maybe the root cause...not the routers.
