Title: cannot play HD video files on dns-345
Post by: Kaelan on February 28, 2015, 07:15:14 PM
Hi all,

I just purchased the dns-345 and I cannot play any HD video files on dns-345.
also I notice that when I copy files from my PC to dns-345 the speed is only 11/mbps, is there a way to increase the speed?.

I am using wired connection on both dns-345 and my PC to the router.
PC <---wired connection---> router(dir-615) <---wired connection---> dns-345

the router that im using is DIR-615 that came with my ISP
is there any configuration that I missed to setup?

Please help.

How are you accessing your video files for playback? (e.g. launching media player on client PC and browsing for the selected file on the DNS-345 through Windows?)

My average throughput hovers between 40-55 MB/s, however, I've observed that on one particular PC, the throughput stays around 10-14 MB/s, which I attribute (possibly) to a network card issue. Do you have another PC to test throughput? Do you have a GB switch you can directly connect your DNS-345 (and possibly your PC) to? Placing the DNS-345 and PC on a dedicated switch will isolate video streaming throughput on the switch, removing other bottlenecks. O've also found that placing my DNS-345s on a dedicated switch results in a general improvement in performance.

So... I've given you a few different avenues for investigation. . . ;)

 I subsequently added some additional recommendations in my original reply, so you may want to re-read. . . ;)

Thank you for your thoughts.. I access the video files on DNS-345 by browsing it thru Windows and using VLC media player.
I was able to isolate the issue and it was on the router(dir-615). the router(dir-615) does not have gigabit lan port that is causing the issue. my pc have gigabit network card.

I used to have a DIR-615, and it was a solid router for the years that I used it. Your best bet would be to purchase a router with a wider data-pipe, both for wired and wireless.
