Title: DNS-320L runing very slow on Mac! - Solved!!
Post by: epikionieskritis on March 18, 2015, 09:43:11 AM
Hi there!
I am using DLink DNS-320L (with a static IP address) on my network, with both Mac and windows computers.
At first, when I tried to open any folder on a Mac, it was taking some minutes (!!) to open it and show the contents.
Except that, I couldn't even use the serch (or the spotlight) to serch for any file in the server's hard disks!! the results were always zero!!
After trying a lot of things, the only one that worked just fine, was this:
When using a Mac, I connect to the server using "Command+K" on the finder and then type the IP like this: afp://192.168.x.xx
After that, I connected using guest account... Problem solved!! The speed is way faster and search works just fine!

Yesterday, after a power disconection, the server came back to the "beutifull" old days of runing slooooowwww, not only when accessing files, but also when trying to open them and waiting "for ever" to show their contents!! This happens only to both iMacs! On computers running Windows, I don't have a problem.
I have enabled AFP on server's settings, I even tried to reset to factory default settings, but nothing!
Can someone please help me and tell me what to do?? I'm stuck.....

Thanks in advance!

Are you wired with both the DNS and PCs?
What mfr and model # is the main host router?
Are you using a reserved IP address for the DNS and PCs?
Try using a static IP address of .32 ON the DNS. Reserve IP addresses for PC ON the router.

Thanks for your reply!
- Yes, DNS, Windows PC and Mac computers are all wired.
The DNS and the 3 mac computers are connected on a DLink switch (DGS-1008D) and this access point is connected on the company's network.
I have another windows computer, connected to another switch etc...etc.... and all those switches are conected to the company's network (on the wall sockets!)
- I dont know the model number of the main host router (I don't have access to that yet)
- All the computers and the DNS have static IP addresses
So far, the PCs running windows, work fine! I have slow access only on the Macs!

If the Macs are only exhibiting this issue, then I presume there maybe an issue with the Macs. I'd connect 1 Mac an the DNS on a Gb switch and disconnect the switch from the main network and test the Mac and DNS isolated and run some read and write tests. Be sure to disable any Mac security SW while testing. Disable any background running programs and be sure to fully exit from other applications that are running.

I tried all those things, but still the same problem...
I tried one more thing today, and I would like some help:
I have installed in the NAS 2 hard disks, with RAID 1 configuration.
I removed one disk and installed it in a windows computer, so that I can use that disk as a "Network" drive and use the disk in the NAS as the "Back-Up" drive, (using the "Remote Backup" feature from the DLink's Applications).
When I inserted the drive to the windows computer, it asked me to format it!!! So, I removed it again...

What should I do, in order to work like this:
Install one hard disk (2TB) on a windows computer (to use it as a Network drive, where 5 computers store files) and
leave the other disk in the NAS so that I can use it as a Back up disk, using -a scheduled- "Remote Bacup" or something like that.

Thanks again

If you formatted the drive in the DNS and attempt to remove the drive from the DNS and place in to a PC, Windows wont be able to read the drive as the DNS formats it into a drive format which Windows cant' read natively. Thus if you want to use Windows then the drive will need to be formatted so it can read it. You'll loose ALL data on this drive if you do so.

Hi there and thanks for your reply!
I have two disks, formated as RAID 1.
If I remove one drive from the NAS, will the second drive (which I will leave in the NAS) work??
I was thinking to follow these steps:
1. Remove one drive from the NAS (lets name it "Disk1")
2. Check if the remaing drive ("Disk2") in the NAS, works over the network.
3. Place Disk1 in a windows computer, and format it.
4. Copy all the contents from Disk2 (NAS) to the formated (Disk1) in the windows computer.
5. Now that I have 2 disks with the same contents, I will use the windows computer (Disk1) as a network drive, and use the NAS disk as the "Back-up" drive, using the remote (or lockal) backup feature, from the Servers Control Panel.
Waiting for your reply.
Thanks!

Hi there all!!
So, I figured it out!
I logged in to Share Center using  the IP of the NAS.
I went to Management -> Account Network Shares  and created a new Share, checking the folder I want to share.
I shared the 2 “main” folders I am working on (e.g. “Company’s jobs” and “Customers jobs”) and that’s it!
On the mac computers, I logged in using Command+K and typing the NAS IP like this: 192.168.XXX.XXX.
I logged in as “Guest” and the read-write speed is much faster!!
I hope this helps anyone that has the same problem…
Thank you all for your help!
