Title: Create a new SSID/passphrase-protected network from an existing network?
Post by: McFlurry on March 31, 2015, 06:46:12 AM
Hey everyone.

Topic says it all, like they say. Having bought a D-Link DAP-1360 for my parents (hardware version C1, firmware version 3.04 for usage in the European Union hardware region), I'd like to set it up at their summertime trailer park (that has a local WiFi-network). Since I'm more or less a total newbie in terms of setting up networks, I really appreciate some help! :)
To illustrate what I'm trying to achieve in a more graphical way, the attached picture will hopefully explain it in a bit further. Any help is most welcome!

I believe you would have to use the 1360 as a bridge to connect to the main host signal, then connect another 1360 to the bridged 1360 and run the 2nd 1360 in AP mode to provide you with a separate LAN network system. The 1360 does not support Bridge with AP mode at the same time.

  • What region are you located?

Thank you! (sorry about not stating the region - my original post has been updated, and for the record I'm in the European Union)

Getting a second D-Link 1360 is unfortunatly not an option (or well, at least not a viable option - having to explain to my parents that they need two routers just to get everything working is just asking way, way too much from them :) ).

Are there any other options that I should consider? They are currently using a DIR-506L Pocket Router sporting this particular feature, however since it doesn't have external antennas like the D-Link 1360 has it's just not suitable to use inside a trailer/caravan. Basically all I want is for the 1360 to replicate what the DIR-506L has been doing for years. In the DIR-506L manual (http://www.dlink.com/-/media/Consumer_Products/DIR/DIR%20506L/Manual/DIR506LA1Manual092612v10US.pdf) [link], this is refered to as the "Wi-Fi Hotspot Mode".

Seems like your model 1360 does support Bridge mode with AP mode at the same time:

I recommend checking out the user manual for this model DAP and see about how to set it up...

FurryNutz - thank you for all of your help. Unfortunately, it seems like the Bridge Mode with AP won't work. Here's an excerpt from the D-Link 1360 manual:

"Note: The Bridge with AP mode is not specified in the Wi-Fi or IEEE standards. This mode will only work using two DAP-1360 units. Communication with other APs (even other D-Link APs) is not guaranteed."

Now, I have no idea what router the camp site in question uses, but I'm almost certain that it's  not a D-Link 1360 effectively leaving this option out. Again, what I'm looking for is a solution that "catches" the existing camp site WiFi and then creates a new/second password protected WiFi-network that my parents can use to hook up their tablets and computers to.

The "Bridge Mode with AP" is really similar to what I'm looking for, and although I very much appreciate your suggestion it doesn't seem like it's applicable unless the camp site would also use D-Link 1360 routers?

I see...ya seems like you wont be able to use the 1360 in your configuration unless the site uses a 1360 as the main AP.

So you can only use bridge mode by itself.
