Title: 868L vs 665 2.4 speed
Post by: Alezis on July 12, 2015, 07:51:40 PM
I had wifi issues with my galaxy s4 on my dir-655 (that I bought new 8 year ago) and I always ran the 1.21 firmware on it. But my HP DV7 laptop never had a wifi issue and was connecting to 300mbit/s. I've decided to risq and update the firmware on my 655 and it's the worst decision I ever took, it's now even worst on my S4 and the router get really hot.

So I've decided to replace the 655 with a DIR-868L HW:B1 FW:2.03, I've been reading good reviews and smallnet builder rank this router #3 overall.

My S4 has now stable wifi but my laptop is now showing 130mbits instead of 300mbit that I had on my 655.

The 868 has manual wifi settings to 20/40MHz on channel 6. What ever settings I've tried manually or automatic, I am always at 130mbits.

Is there a setting I missed ?

Speaking of missing, I miss the orange UI, there was a lot more settings and parameters and offered a lot more flexibility !

answers below:

  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
Link> >FW Update Process (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42457.0) No, the firmware update has been offered as soon I took out the router from the box, I did apply the firmware and then configure the router... so what now ? I have not reset the router BEFORE the update and did not reset AFTER the update...

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations Videotron, modem in DHCP
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
Cable
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Arris TM722G

  • What wireless modes are you using?
2.4GHz n only on ch#6 (the less crowded in regards of my neighbors) set to 20/40MHz as per my 655 was
  • Ensure any devices with WiFi adapter drivers are updated.
my wireless card in my laptop has the latest driver and was showing 300mbits/s with my 655
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by that maybe causing interferences?
no, 1.9GHz
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use InSSIDer (http://www.techspot.com/downloads/5936-inssider.html) to find out. How many? Use v3, its free.
besides my neighbors, no but neighbors signal strenght is around -90 to -80, the 868L shows steady levels between -60 to -40
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF.
Not sure about this one, I have to figure this out but I did not touch ANY of the parameters where my 655 was showing 300mbits/s on my laptop and the 868L is stuck at 130Mbits/s

There you go, if you need other precisions, please let me know...

Its recommended to perform a reset before and after installing new FW:
Link> >FW Update Process (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42457.0)

Disable the HT 20/40Mhz since your running single mode N and test...

What model and Mfr is the wireless adapter thats in the laptop?

I understand I need to reset before and after firmware update after reading these instructions. The fact is that I did NOT reset before, I took the router out of the box, the router itself suggested to update and I applied a new available firmware. Once the firmware got installed, I started configuring the router. Now what can be done to fix this then ? I just reset the router and start over the configuration ? I can't "undo" the first step as I did not reset the router once out of the box... I thought it's already in "out of the box" mode no ?

Ok I will deactivate the 20/40 and see the result.

The wifi card is a Broadcom 43225 802.11b/g/n running driver v.5.100.82.139, windows states it's the latest driver.

Fixed ! Removing the HT20/40 now I see 300Mbits/s ! Thanks for the tip !

So if I ever wish to go back to mix mode let's say g/n, I won't be able to get 300Mbits/s ?

Is this normal though ? Before I had a steady signal at 130Mbits but now at 300Mbits, I get a lot of drops in the signal strenght...

One neighbor on ch11 but regardless of the channel I pick, I will always be overlaping with other neighbors.

You think switching to ch11 will give more stable signal ? Everything seem to be working but I don't know why I see so much fluctuations in the signal strenght...

well, I've got another issue with my Galaxy S4 now (which I used to have issue with my 655 too and made me switch to the 868). Now I read that dlink products do not work well with the Galaxy S4...

in regards of the speed, my laptop is always showing 300mbits/s. I don't understand why transfers are still showing aroung 5-7 MBps where technically, 300mbits/s=37MB/s.

Besides seeing dips in the signal when using inssider and "slow" speed transfer (like during backup files), my laptop does not seem to suffer from it.

My S4 though now works and suddenlty says it's lost connection to the server for example when I am on youtube. Connction show full strenght on the wifi, I can see little arrows of up/down traffic flashing but I cannot receive any data from internet.

I need to disconect the wifi and reconnect. When this does not work, I switch bands from 2.4->5 or 5->2.4 and most of the time it start working again for a certain period of time.

My 655 used to make my S4 disconect completely from the wifi. Now the 868 stays connected to the phone but I have no internet...

I've tried to change channel as per your suggestion and it still the same issue, not better, not worst.

So here you go for the udpates...

Is HT 20/40Mhz Co-existance still disabled and mode set for single mode N on 2.4Ghz?

Yes it is deactivated, I am on N mode only.

Funny thing is that my computer shows steady signal today on inssider !

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

yeeaahh... I will try that even though I am not really excited to be asked to reset my router and then my phone and then being told my phone is defective...

But I will give this a try since you've been really helpful here.

Thanks for all your suggestions !

Ask for level 2 or higher support. You can reference this thread if you like so they know we've already covered the bases...

EXCATLY like I thought... they only made me change channels (from 11 with the suggestions on this forum to 9 to the indian person at the other end of the phone), I said that I ALREADY reviewed this on the dlink forums, I wanted him to come see this thread and he said he could not, I told that I wanted level2 support but I could not get it. They said to try this for one week and see how it works...

urgh...

On top of my unstable internet connection ONLY on my galasy s4, sometime on 2.4 band, my S4 is connecting to the wifi but I get this message "waiting for DHCP adress" and it stays there, no internet...

95% of the time when I come back home, my S4 NEVER connect back to the router...

My laptop always work and my phone works everywhere else besides on my 655 and now my 868...

The other person on the chat wanted me to roll back the firmware to v2.01.05, I am currently on v2.03. I aksed him twice if I should really rollback and he told me to call tech support like you did but I only got to change the channel... impossible to get level2...

You can revert back and test if you want too. Just follow the >FW Update Process (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42457.0). Don't load any saved config files, just factory reset then set up from scratch.
