Title: DIR-615 and DAP-1320
Post by: nnmais on October 07, 2015, 10:08:12 AM
Hi!

Please help me with extending DIR-615 coverage using a DAP-1320 extender.

I use D-Link DIR-615 (Hardware: B2; Firmware: 2.27RU) for quite a few years to cover my appartment with wireless Internet. Works pretty good, one exception though – a signal in one of the rooms is very weak. That is why I recently purchased a D-Link Dap-1320 (Hardware: B1; Firmware: 2.03) extender.

Configured with no issues at all – using either iOS application or a browser. Configured it using the same SSID and password – the idea was merely to extens the coverage, nothing more!

Result is as follows: my DIR-615 reports the extender as one of it’s clients. Accoriding to DAP-1320 configuration utility it’s configured and connected OK. DAP-1320 in turn can be registered as a WiFi on the client (iPhone). Well, all is well… except for when connected to DAP-1320 Internet doesn’t work – at all. It just takes me to go back to DIR-615, Internet is back!

What is it that I’m doing wrong? Please advise.

Thanks in advance

Be sure to set up the DAP in extender or repeater mode, not as a wireless client.

What wireless modes are you using on the DIR router?
Try setting single mode N and WPA2 AES only.

Thanks.

What Hardware version is your DAP? Look at the sticker under the DAP.
- DAP 1320 (Hardware version B1); DIR-615 (Hardware version B2)
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the DAPs web page under status.
- DAP 1320 (Firmware version 2.03); DIR-615 (Firmware version 2.27RU)
What region are you located?
- Moscow

The DAP is set in extender role.

The router is configured as 802.11n only.
Changed the WPA setting (it was Auto (WPA or WPA2)) to WPA2 Only. Cipher type is still AES.

Alas, still no Internet when registered on DAP. What else can you advise?

P.S. Quite unexpectedly (at least for me) perfomance/coverage is somewhat better with WPA2 Only setting - when connected to DIR-615, DAP disconnected. Can this setting alone affect performance/coverage?

Yes, WPA2 and AES have best performances.

Try this, Disable WPA all together on the DIR router and then reconfigure the DAP to connect to the DIR while in OPEN mode. Then test. Do you get any internet while connected to the DAP?

OK, getting more interesting. Set Wireless Security Mode on DIR to None. Reconfigured DAP as an extender (WPA/WPA2) mode. Now Internet works if connected to DAP and it DOES NOT if connected to open DIR-provided network.

What could that be? Any more suggestion?

Thanks

Any further ideas of what to try? Thanks

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

Contacting local vendor support by phone was the first thing I've done. They listened attentively and suggested to right a mail to their general support e-mail. No response after 10 days. The same about the local support forum from the vendor.
From you I learnt much more - like WPA2 only setting that somewhat helped me.

Anyway - thanks for your help.

Possible a misconfiguration of the DAP or the main host router. The extender should be connecting to the main host routers SSID name and PW and then exteding it with out problems. You might try testing the DAP on a different model router, say at a friend or families place to see if you can get it set up there.

Ok I see.
Are there any compatibility requirments between a main router and an extender? In simpler words is DAP-1320 compatible with all of the D-Link routers or just some of them? If I'm not mistaken I saw a note that an extender should be of the same (or better) chipset as the main router.

Hi nnmais,

have you managed to solve your problem?

I've got very similar problem with DIR-615 B2 main router and Xiaomi MI-mini router as a wireless repeater. When I change my wifi PC connection from DIR to MI internet disappears exactly for 10 minutes and then resumes. Then I switch my PC back to DIR and again I loose internet for 10 minutes. What is interesting - during this "dead" time I can not ping to DIR but can to any other device in my home network.

As I see the same behaviour for Android phone as a client and for other repeater, it lets me think that the problem lies somewere in DIR's routing table or ARP cache. Going to look closely in there.

Regards,
Vladimir

Hi Vladimir,

Thanks for your note.

No, I failed to fix the issue, unfortunately. Having implemented WPA2 only setting - as suggested on this forum - I noticed a considerable improvement of coverage by my DIR-615 B2. But this is all I achieved so far, as for my DLink repeater - I cannot make it working along with the DIR-615.

Looking forard to any further suggestions.

Thanks,
Anton

Possible faulty DAP unit. I recommend contacting D-Link on the phone and ask them about it.
