Hello all!
Just got the 5500, replaced my 4500 (R.I.P. you gave me your best for 8 long years)
Having a slight issue with speed and Streamboost.
Here is my speed w/o StreamBoost enabled.
Here is my speed with SB enabled (get the same results with ABE enabled as well)
I am in Houston Tx (A suburb of it).
Suddenlink ISP (Cable)
Computer is hardwired to router.
5500 FW version: 1.11 Date: 23 Oct 2013
Modem Manf: Arris
Modem Model: TM822G
Checking through the router page tells me firmware is up to date but I see 1.12 and 1.13 available. DLink FW Download page (http://support.dlink.com/ProductInfo.aspx?m=dgl-5500) Wanted to check here if i should go to 1.13 since the router check told me it was all up to date.
Thanks for you time.

Link>Welcome! (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48135.0)
- What region are you located?
- Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
- Turn off ALL QoS (http://vonage.nmhoy.net/qos.html) or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quality_of_service) or Gamefuel. For the DGL-5500, review this for Streamboost information and settings: Furry's DGL-5500 Review (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=55136.0)
Let us know if disableing ABE first, then both SB and ABE bring speeds back up.
I recommend manually updating FW on routers using the followoing process:
Link> >FW Update Process (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42457.0)
Let us know the speed results before attempting a FW update.
-
Sorry thought I gave all that info already.
Region: Houston Texas
Harwired to router
Speeds are drastically reduced with SB and ABE enabled, same with just SB enabled.
The only way I get my normal, accurate speed is with SB disabled.
-
Ok, Lets go for the upgrade:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=62140.0 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=62140.0)
Please sure you follow the FW update process and give the SB and ABE time to test and settle in before making any speeds tests and changes. I recommend turning OFF ALL other devices accept for one wired LAN PC. Also reboot the ISP modem right after the FW file is sent. Set up from scratch after the last Factory reset, set up WiFi and then leave the router alone until SB and ABE testing is done. Keep checking the Testing status of SB. Once it's complete post it's findings here. I'm hoping it should be close to your ISP speeds then.

New DGL-5500 Only Firmware Update Process! (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=59844.0)
-
Ok will start that now, btw the way, there are two diff threads you gave for upgrading the FW one form 2014 and one from 2015) I went with the most recent one
-
Lets use the New DGL-5500 Only Firmware Update Process. I'll be installing my 5500 this evening since my ISP upgraded my speeds from 50/ to 100/3. Need to see how the 5500 does since it hasn't been online in a while. ::)
-
Ok following that now. BTW did the facotyr reset before and after the FW upgrade.
Both times was forced through the intial setup. After FW upgrade, and factory reset, went through initial setup and initial speed test said failed. Did not see any mention about that in the fw instructions so I am wondering now that I am at the step waiting for the streamboost page to say DONE if it will even ever get there since My test was failed and it told me to check my network connection.
-
Ok been over an hour, streamboost page still says Testing.
-
Ya I gave up and disabled ABE. Set 120 and 4. I'll enable ABE right before bed and check in the morning.

I've had ABE disabled for several months now (since changing to a new ISP). I'm getting the speeds I pay for (100Mbps DOWN / 5Mbps UP). When I did have ABE enabled, I was only getting about 80% of subscribed speeds (80-85Mbps DOWN / 4.25Mbps UP), which is an indication that Streamboost was doing what it was intended to do (I think ???)
My 5500 is soon to be retired, boxed up, and headed to the closet to accompany the 4500. Making way for the D-Link DIR-890L. ;D
-
It only picked up 24Mb and have a couple hours it didn't finish so I disabled ABE. ::)
-
Ok been over an hour, streamboost page still says Testing.
Still not sure what I should with do this issue. Still says Testing on the Streamboost page.
Disabled ABE, Manually set speeds to 200/20 ookla speedtest gave me 175/15
Disabled SB and got my regular speeds 212/21
Faulty router?
Also, it sees my computer and my wifes mac (both hard wired) in the my network section(no computer name for either, but ip and mac address) , but neither computer are showing in the port fwd computer section, nor are they listed in the Network Settings under Dynamic DHCP.
-
Faulty SB code from QualComm. >:(
Ya I let mine run over night. Managed to get up from 24Mb to 32Mb. Oh boy. So I disabled ABE.
Set SB enabled and input 220Mb and test.
-
Ok will do that
When you say Test do you mean the Test bandwidth button on that Streamboost page? or the test via the speedtest site?
Asking because previously I noticed with ABE disabled and manually clicking Test button, the progress meter comes up, takes about 3 min to complete and then just disappears.
I'll make another thread about the router not showing my hardwired mac and windows computers.
-
Other speed test site. Don't use the test button.
-
Ok made it 240/25 and speedtest site gave me only ten better on DL 185/21
Still get accurate results with SB disabled.
-
What happens if you try 300/30?
-
300/30 gave me 192/21
Tried 375 and 45 and got 193/21.
-
400/30?
Ya, this is the issue we struggled with on ABE. Never really worked.
-
400/30 gave me 189/21 I do not have ABE enabled.
I guess I will have to just keep it disabled, unfortunate that I am not able to use the main selling point of this router.
-
Ya, it was a roller coaster ride after it came out. Big disaapointment in the end. It's unfortunate that QC didn't do a better job. We'd been hoping for a next follow on to the 4500. Got all hyped up and ready for the 5500 only to be a bummer. Left a bad taste in a few folks at D-Link to say the least. Don't know if there will be another one. Kind of getting to the point with ISP speeds getting so fast. QoS of any kind isn't really needed any more. Had some discussions about it. Works well on slower ISP speeds, 100Mb or less I guess. Anything faster? Eh, not so much I guess. Not sure what the future holds. Unfortanltly I can't recommend this model router to anyone. :'(
If you get a chance. Set up ABE enabled again and leave it over night with the ISP modem and one wired PC that doesn't have anything running on it. Look at the results the next morning. I presume you won't see expected speeds. Might try regressing back FW version and test if you really wanna see how it goes.
Leave ABE disabled and set the best value for your isp. it needs some over head so there will be some missing. Maybe 4%.
-
Appreciate the tip and advice but would really rather not enable something that will decrease the speed I am paying for, even if it just a little bit of a decrease. Guess I should have done more/better research when getting this new router, had good experience with the 4400 so just assumed 5500 would be good as well.
Oh well we tried. Thanks for all the help. Appreciate your time.
-
Ok, no worries. Keep ABE off. I really don't think it needed.
Let us know how it goes with SB only.
If your not happy, and if your still under refund polidy, can send it back. There are other better routers. ;)

I've had ABE disabled for several months now. I've never had a problem nor noticed any issues when gaming (Xbox Live on two Xbox One gaming consoles) or steaming music / movies / browsing the internet.
What happens multiply your subscribed ISP speed by 25% and enter those values in ABE? Do you get your subscribed ISP speeds? Be sure to keep ABE and Streamboost unchecked.
I just ran a speed test (ABE off / Streamboost enabled) using 125 / 6.25 (ABE) and I'm getting pretty close to ISP subscribed speed.
-
Ya seems if you manually enter in higher values, you get on or near your spec ISP speeds. Not sure if this affects SB or not in correct operation. ???
-
What versions are the Windows and Mac OSX?
Any of them have static IP addresses assigned ON the PCs?
-
MAc OS Yosemite and Windows 7 Ultimate 64 -bit neither have static IPS, but then again the other 6 that ARE listed do not have static IP's either.
-
So they don't appear at all? I'll have a look with mine and see, I have Yosimite and Windows 10.
You might reboot the router then also reboot both PCs and see.
-
My Windows 10 PC shows up however the Mac Mini does on using OSX 10.10.5.
You might want to reboot the router, turn OFF ALL devices accept for one wired PC and go from there.
-
Tried that after I set everything up. Tried it again now. I got nothing.
When I had SB enabled my windows and mac computer did show under My networks in the GUI, but still never showed in the DHCP section.
-
My Mac Book Pro with 10.10.5 is listed the the client list.
I think my 868L will be going online sometime this weekend. ::)
-
Nothing else I can try? guess it doesn't matter. Surely won't be recommending dlink to anyone in the future.
-
Are you still in the return period of this router from where you bought it?
Unfortunately the 5500 had a bumpy ride during it's development. Thats not to say that ALL D-Links routers are the same. Do not let the 5500 spoil your experiences with D-link routers. There are better D-Link model routers out there which I have made you aware of. You got this router for a cheap price. Most of us paid full price when it first came out. Kind wish I hadn't however live and learn.
Other than disabling ABE and setting a manual SB value, not much else. I recommend returning the router and getting into one of the models mentioned do you.

Agree! I've had the DIR-868L for quite awhile! It serves as a great router AND AP! Furry recommend this router for me awhile back, and I'm glad I made the purchase! Money well spent IMO! I'm also really happy with the DIR-890L! Performance exceeds the 5500 without a doubt! Keep in mind, there are a few "bugs" that I really hope D-Link doesn't drop the ball on (QoS / Naming devices & Re-naming devices seem). I became really frustrated with D-Link after the 5500 falling short of expectations and D-Link seeming to "give up" on the 5500. I tried a few other "top of the line" routers from other manufacturers, and became just as / even more frustrated with "buggy" firmware and "sub par" performance. Just my two cents ;)

Add me to the list of "paid full price" for the 5500. Live and learn, like Furry! After my experiences with the 5500 and being one of the first to own it [5500], I did wait on the DIR-890L. I kept on eye on the forums and did my research! I think I waited too long :D, because I would've been enjoying it longer had I purchased it sooner. :P I was holding out for the DIR-895L, as it was suppose to be released in the spring of 2015. It's now fall of 2015 and still no DIR-895L. I'm 100% satisfied with my purchase of the DIR-890L, even with a few "bugs" that still need to be worked out. Again, I'm hopeful D-Link will get them straightened out.
If you can return the 5500, do it! Give the 868L a try or the 890L a try. If you're gaming (console or PC), I recommend the 890L! ;D
-
Be aware that D-Link partnered with QualComm and there Streamboost technology. It was QC that had a hand in the 5500s bumpy ride. ::)
-
This why you left the forums in a hurricane storm Shooter? ???

I guess you could say so, but I still had "D-Link" in my blood ;)
Hey, any chance you can "pull some strings" and "reinstate" my original forum username 'BiggShooter' ? :)
-
Ok. Would have been nice if you had said something before storming off. ::)
I'll ask, not sure if it can be. Have you tried to register that name?

I know....."live and learn"...right? :D
I haven't tried to register that name....just thought it might be easier to "reinstate" my original username. :) I think just my "username" needs to be changed from "Vigilante" back to "Biggshooter". If that can be done on forum end, that would be great ;)
-
See what happens if you try to re-register it.

I'm BACK! ;D
I lost all my "forum" stats, but I guess that's the price I pay for deleting my account in the first place. Live and learn! ;)
