Title: Inconsistent WiFi Performance
Post by: madwedge on October 27, 2015, 09:22:15 AM
Hello,

I've recently bought a DIR-868L as my Sky Hub 2.0 SR102 WiFi performance was terrible.  The 868L I have is a revision B and the first thing I've done is update the Firmware to the latest version.  I then ran through the Wizard and configured the SSID for 2.4 and 5GHz channel.

My issue is, I'm getting inconsistent file transfer speeds between my QNAP TS-212 NAS and my iPhone and iPad. My NAS is connected directly to the 868L with a Cat6 cable.

I've connected purely to the 5GHz channel with my iPad and iPhone. A couple of days ago I was getting about 10 MegaBytes per second file transfer speeds on my iPhone. Last night I actually managed to get 20MBps. However on my iPad I only seem to get 1MBps. This is the same whether I'm across the house, or right in front of the 868L.  Any ideas what could be causing this slow down?

Also this morning the 5GHz channel seemed to disappear completely and my iPhone couldn't detect it to connect to it.  I assumed it had stopped broadcasting??

Is the 5GHz channel Wireless AC only or can Wireless N devices connect to 5GHz as well?

Many thanks

Edit - Additional Info:  868L is connected to my Sky SR102. I have disabled WiFi on the SR102 and have used the DMZ IP of 192.168.0.254.  The 868L Internet IP I've used as 192.168.0.254.  I hope this is correct. I seem to be able to get my max 18Mbps (approx) broadband download speeds on my PC directly connected to the 868L.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48327.0) and Managing Signal Congestion (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53228.0) and Good Neighbour Policy (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=10634.0)

Try single mode N or AC on 5Ghz?[/li]
[li]Try setting a manual Channel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_channels) to a open or unused channel. Try channel 48 or 149 on 5Ghz.[/li]
[li]What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Encryption_Standard), so you might want to try TPIK (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temporal_Key_Integrity_Protocol) only or Auto TPIK and AES. [/li]
[li]Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by that maybe causing interferences?[/li]
[li]Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use InSSIDer (http://www.techspot.com/downloads/5936-inssider.html) to find out. How many? Use v3, its free.[/li]
[li]If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI (http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-features/30969-what-do-80211ns-optional-features-mean-for-you), WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless. [/li][/list]

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Many thanks for the quick reply. I'm just leaving the office so will review this tonight when I get home and try out your config suggestions. Will update results soon.

Thanks again
