Title: DIR-860L drops all connections from the 2.4Ghz bandwidth then cannot reconnect
Post by: kzndr on November 19, 2015, 09:09:23 AM
Hi,

This is my second DIR-860L. The first died in a power spike. I had no issues til it's death.

With this current router, a few days ago I noticed it would disconnect my chromecast and require set up. I then realized that all my devices who had both 2.4 and 5 Ghz bandwidths would only connect to the 5g one.  They all state that they would not accept my password which at the time was the default one.

I have factory reset the modem, checked for firmware upgrades using the functionality on the admin ui, changed default SSID for both bands, and corresponding passwords. After this it allowed me to connect yesterday but sometime in the night it disconnected everything on the problematic wifi band.

I've used a wifi analyzer to check for other signals that may interfere; there is one pesky neighbor but i switched to channel 11
details of router:
DIR-860L
Hardware Version: 1A
Firmware: 1.08

2.4Ghz Band
Mixed n, g, and b
channel 11
transmission rate auto
channel width 20/40
WPA-Personal
Auto WPA/WPA2
TKIP and AES
group key: 3600

The 5Ghz bandwidth has absolutely no issues.

Please help?! I still have various wifi devices that can only use 2.4 and cannot connect, my ol' chromecast being one of them... they are sad and isolated...

FurryNutz,

Most of these questions have been answered in post, of those that have not...

US region
Yes a factory reset has been done, no firmware upgrades have been performed.

No other Wifi routers, phones, or Wifi APs in area. Of devices that are connected, none. This is the problem. So far as what devices are supposed to connect to it... wifi scale, chromecast, various android phones/laptops or tablets at any given time, they all continue to have the same problem connecting to this specific 2.4 Ghz wifi. taken elsewhere. no issues.

5Ghz has no issues. the SSID names I pick are all unique to life as they are made up and would not be used elsewhere.

As for service, it's Cable; modem is Arris CM820A

Attempting the single mode suggestions.

update:
Single mode N channel 11 did not succeed.

I would try the following:
Turn OFF ALL Devices, accept for one wired LAN cable PC. Disable any 3rd party security software temporarily as this tends to interfere with the next process.
Download the latest FW file and unpack the .zip file.
Factory reset the router.
Manually upload the FW .bin file.
Factory reset the router after the FW file was process.
Set up from scratch.
Disable WPS and Set IPv6 to Local Connection Only.
Set 2.4Ghz to single mode G, WPA/TPIK only manual channel 11 and Channel width to 20Mhz. Test.
Then try 2.4Ghz to Mixed G and N, WPA2 and Mixed TPIK/AES and manual channel 11 and channel width to 20Mhz. Test. Then using same settings, change to 20/40Mhz auto channel width.

Id start with one wireless device first and graduate adding devices after testing each one. Be sure to clear out or reset any saved wifi profiles on each device. Forget any prior connections and set up new ones.

Hi,

Same problem with a B1 device. I have in a room some N clients (working in the 2.4 GHz band) and all of them get IP and they stay connected but, after some minutes, they loss the connection with the gateway (they cannot do ping) and they do not access to the internet. Before the connection is lost, the ping time increases dramatically. The problem starts when more than 5 devices are connected. Then, the connection is up and down continuosly and I must reboot, but the problem starts again.

I have forced the G/N and N only modes without success. The channel is selected manually and the bandwidth is 20 MHz only. The authentication mode is WPA.
There is no interferences issues in the room or with other APs.

Any suggestions?
Thank you in advance.

What are the connected devices doing when connected to the router? Streaming, surfing? etc?

Hi again,

- The hardware version is B1.
- The firmware is 2.03b03 (the last one).
- The region is ES (Spain).
- The devices are wireless connected (N devices), but a PC was connected to a LAN port in order to configure the router.
- A reset was performed when the new firmware was loaded.

The devices was surfing (some web browsing, Youtube videos, etc).

Wireless configuration
--
1) The SSID is custom for the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands (there are not near APs with the same SSID).
2) The channel is fixed (channel 11), and there is not interference with other APs on this channel.
3) The security mode is WPA (Only none, WEP or WPA are selectables).
4) The wireless devices are netbooks with N network cards (based on ralink).
5) The AP is in a place isolated in terms of interferences (APs, phones, etc), so I think it would not be the problem.

Thank you.

Any of these devices 5Ghz supporting?

So if you have 4 devices connected, the router works well? Then adding the 5th or more then the router fails?

The devices only works with 2.4 GHz.
Yes, with 2 or 3 it seems to work properly.

Have you tried to narrow down if maybe a particular device is causing the problem by checking which device when connected, then the router fails?
If you disable WPA all together as a quick test then connect 5 or more devices, does it still fail?

You might try this, download the FW file again. Use IE or FF and disable any PC security software temporarily. Factory reset, re-load the FW file. Factory reset once more then set up from scratch.
