Title: DIR-850L small office max number of users.
Post by: rekom23 on February 25, 2016, 06:13:23 AM
Hi,

I'm planning to buy this router. We are in a small coworking space (one big room) with a 100/mbits internet link. We are 6 persons and i would like to know if this router can support that number of users.
I estimated a maximum of 22 devices connected at the same time as we are a bit geek... (6 laptops, 6 mobile phones, 6 tablets and probably 1 wifi printer, 3 laptop of clients visiting us).
Do you think this router should be enough ? I'm not worried about the speed as all the devices won't be sucking the bandwidth at the same time, but more if it will be capable to handle 22 simultinaly connected devices (The dhcp server will be handled by a small linux box).

Best.

Link>Welcome! (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48135.0)

If you have DHCP services handling else where then I would recommend getting into a dedicated Wireless AP, i.e. DAP-1650
http://us.dlink.com/products/access-points-range-extenders-and-bridges/wireless-ac1200-dual-band-gigabit-range-extender/ (http://us.dlink.com/products/access-points-range-extenders-and-bridges/wireless-ac1200-dual-band-gigabit-range-extender/)

The DIR series routers are designed and setup for main host router and DHCP operations. Yes they can handle your wireless client needs.

Hum, i'm currently living in Brazil and unfortunatly this specific dedicated wireless AP doesn't seem to be available :(

On the dir-850L you can't "turn them" into AP disabling the DHCP mode ?

Just to satisfy my curiosity how many client the DIR-850L could handle? I know there's a theoratical answer, but i'm curious of to know if you have tested with real client.
My experience with a consumer grade router (a long time ago and i can't remember the brand, not sure it was D-Link) was around 15 to 17. Then the AP was crazy and didn't allowed other people to connect you had to restart it (even when the leases were terminated...)...

I would say maybe 25-30 depending upon using both radios and what each client was actually doing. Client application connections is also a factor. I think your needs will be ok as long as you can use both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz radios.

I would not advise that. The router case is designed for passive ventilation and there are slats at the top and bottom for air flow. I recommend on a desk or table some place.
