*D-Link mods: if this type of post is verboten, nuke it and bust me accordingly.
I just received this in my company email. I work with this guy and have seen the photos hanging on his cube walls for years. I had no idea of the scope of his work.
As some of you may know by now I am also moving from my house to a retirement community at the end of the month. Some of you may also be familiar with a 16 foot model of the nuclear carrier USS Enterprise that I built for about 20 years. You could see pictures of the model at the website link below, if that does not come up then google S******* enterprise and the appropriate link will come up.
http://www.carrierbuilders.net/gallery/20070318_USS_Enterprise_1-72/20070318_USS_Enterprise_1-72.htm
Anyhow the carrier has to go. I do not have room for it in the new house. It has been donated to the Navy and will be displayed at the National Museum of Naval Aviation at Pensacola Florida. This is the naval base where all carrier aviators earn their wings. Four members of the museum are showing up on Friday and during the weekend to take apart and move the carrier. Thursday night is the last night for the ship in Dallas. (the rest was deleted)

I have a friend (who also happens to be a HUGH trekkie) who served on the USS Enterprise. I am not certain it is the same vessel (given apparently that name has been used tirelessly, and I am not a Navy guy by any approximation), but this will be linked ceaselessly. Thank you!
-
I do know he must have been single for the last 19 years or so...
-
wow, really?
That is a new level of low blow.
-
You're probably asking yourself: How low can he go?
Well, let's say I am only getting warmed up... :)
-
The 'current' Enterprise, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Enterprise has been around for quite some time :) More than likely this is the same one your friend served on. Also, jeez, could any of you imagine devoting that kind of time to a model???

I've worked with and known this gentleman for 5 years. We are not "friends" but rather, work acquaintances. Apparently, this work of art was in jeopardy of being sc rapped until it found a home in Pensacola. I casually typed in the name "Gabe Suranyi" in google and was hit with page upon page of nothing but web sites, boards, etc. that reference this model. It has unanimously received the highest acclaim for it's quality and workmanship. When I read that in 1996 the Navy flew him 200 miles out to sea to spend 2 days on board the Enterprise, compliments of the Captain, I couldn't have imagined a greater show of appreciation - aside from accepting this model into the Naval museum. Gabe is from Hungary. I don't know how old he was when his family immigrated to America but you can still hear a small vestige of his Hungarian accent. He also is a well respected Electrical engineer and is a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff where we work. I'm pretty sure he has a life outside of model building as I've seen photographs of him holding his grand daughter. Some people spend their time calculating sub nets, or typing dumb stuff on D-Link boards (that would be me) and others spend their time making models worthy of a museum. Carry on, Gabe.
Weird, scrapped got nuked by the filter.

I think he was referring to my friend. I figured it was the same USS Enterprise, I spoke with caution only because I know that the last thing I wanted was an angry sailor telling me how wrong I was.
I didn't have time to look at the full Wiki when I posted before beyond seeing it wasn't an original designation.
I don't calculate subnets with my free time, that's a work thing. At home it's mostly D&D!

Lol... my wife and I spend too much time playing D&D as well as some pc based RPGs and MMOs (her thing has been Guild Wars... mine is Aion). Just thought the wiki on the ship Enterprise was interesting, didn't realize the current ship had been in service so long. Also, Thanks to Clancy for the additional information on the guy who built this wonderful model.
Everyone have fun and get back to your respective games!

Sex?? I am unfamiliar with that one except as a designation for the biological traits commonly associated with gender, which doesn't sound like something you could "try", going to have to wiki that one!

So uhm... anyone else think this is Clancy's way of saying this:

Sorry Clancy!

Thread derailment is something I am unfamiliar with.
Usually it is I that can take any subject and steer it into oncoming traffic. Since I started this thread it therefore became incumbent on my brethren to take what is normally a high tech board and reduce it to the one common denominator. You have not let me down. Ordinarily I'd have to admonish all of you to get your heads out of the gutter because it is getting somewhat crowded down here, but, what the heck. Are we not men? We are D E V O !

Thread derailment: So easy a caveman can do it.
I can see the Imperial Russian geological features (czar-chasm) a mile away here. But with that signature a few lines below that quote, all self control is removed.
Then again that statement seems to reflect perfectly well on what has happened in this thread.
Unlike Clancy however I am going to have to wear a straight face and suggest that the more gutter-al comments might be better suited to a URL that doesn't have "dlink" in it.
I am not saying we need to keep it on topic, but rather that we need to keep it PG in here. Which does not mean more fart jokes (or does it)!
-
PG - Putrid Gas ?
-
Exactly!
-
Dang I thought you meant "quif " with PG. ;D
