Title: Backup strategies ???
Post by: gve on May 26, 2016, 06:06:25 AM
hi,
I've installed a b'local' backup form my DND320L to my DNS320 that works so far.
But this just copies the the files from one NAS to the other.

But imagine the following use cases:

One solution is to make copies with timestamps (history) so you can recover the data from there. As far as I see this solution is not provided by the built in backups of the DNS320L. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Any ideas are welcome.

TIA
gve

I would have a full back of off all of your data in another location or separate NAS.

For a start you should only make the initial backup a full copy of everything on the prime NAS box to the backup NAS box.

After that it should be an incremental copy of changed items only without overwrite.

Doing that your first case is sidestepped because you have both versions on the backup NAS.  Your second case is a non-starter because the incremental backup does not delete the data on the backup NAS.

Yes, I will admit it does require a bit of effort to set up correctly but once setup it just runs.
