Title: Questions and Help with Optimal Setup
Post by: Pedal2Floor on July 15, 2009, 01:22:59 PM
I just purchased a D-Link DIR-825

Its Rev A1 with Firmware 1.01 from NewEgg.  I know enough from reading the forums not to upgrade to 1.11A.

I have two computers I want to setup on my network and I am looking for optimal configuration for my router.

I have a Dell Laptop (Running Vista 64) with a Intel WiFi Link 5100 (A, G, N)
I have a Dell Desktop (Running Vista 64)  with a Dell 1505 WLAN Wireless-N

My laptop from work (Windows XP SP3) that uses Wireless G.

My questions are:

1) What are the most optimal router settings for the above adaptors?

2) Is there a free or cheap program that could tell me what other 2.4ghz devices and what channels they are running on so I can pick a channel with the least interference?  Ditto for the 5ghz spectrum

3) Any problems mounting the router on the wall?

4) I don't intend to do any war driving, but is there a good program that I can use to see where in my condo I am getting the best signal?

Sorry, can not help your with #1.  But you can check with the following for #2 and #4:

inSSIDer

Netstumbler (for upto Windows XP.)

Xirrus Wifi tools

As for #3, you could mount the router onto a wall but then you will need to set up antennas correctly.

Thanks for the reply!

I checked out inSSIDer and it already helped me find what my neighbors are doing at my condo and I was able to switch to a less chatty channel.

I will take a look at Xirrus Wifi tools as well because I like the gadgets they have.

Also saw the information for Wi-Spy 2.4i which would be totally awesome but I cannot justify the price for home usage

thanks!
