Title: DIR-600 Extremely high ping over both wired and wireless connection
Post by: brum on August 18, 2016, 10:36:39 AM
Hello!

My old router got fried after a SEVERE thunderstorm.

My ISP sold me a new one, a DIR-600.
It's been working fine for about 3 weeks now, but 2 days ago my internet started being very unstable.
I get a ton of packet loss and 3000+ ping, even just to the router.

I did a trace-route to test:
 Tracing route to google.com [216.58.211.14]
  1     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  2     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  6     *        *        *     Request timed out.
 7     *        *     3821 ms  74.125.50.149

As you can see my requests are timing out even on the first hop, which is supposed to be the router.

I also tried a ping test just on the router, and i have 3000-5000 ping constantly, not in spikes.
Restarting the router seems to fix the problem temporarily, but it randomly goes back to functioning badly after a while.

I have not messed with any router settings, i have not touched it after the ISP company set it up.

As a side note, i live in a big city so the infrastructure against thunderstorms should be solid, but there haven't been any since i got the new router anyways, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for any help you could provide.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For DSL or Fiber service lines, ensure that the ISP is using good working phone or cable lines to the DSL modem and that the phone lines are filtered correctly. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. I recommend having the ISP service physically check the lines going from the out side to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Firmware Version : 2.17
Hardware Version : Bx
connection: 100mbit/2mbit DSL
D-link DIR-600

I don't think any of the other issues would be related to this, as the ping is high regardless if it's a wired or wireless connection.
I don't see why there would be high ping on the router level (not the modem-internet level) - even the built in UI is slow to change pages if i access 192.168.0.1

The router is not next to any other powered devices besides the modem, but I'll move it further away just to make sure.

The ISP just told me to bring the router in to the manufacturer's repair place.

What region are you located?

Did you by pass the router and do the same test with a direct connection to the ISP modem?

If the DIR-600 router is something sold by them, then they maybe responsible for support on it. Some ISPs handle this in these cases.

I recommend contacting the ISP or taking it back if they recommend it.

I'm from Europe.

I actually called the ISP's servicemen (T-Online) out to my house when my old router died (it was about 2-3 years old).
They brought the DIR-600 with them so i bought it straight away and they set it up, because i didn't want to go through the hassle of going out and buying a new router and setting it up myself. They got it out of a brand new sealed package.

I've done the bypass test before, i just really see no reason to do it in this case; when i restart the router my ping to the router goes below <1ms, which is what it is supposed to be.
It usually works fine for multiple hours or even a day after that, but then i start playing a game or watching youtube and then something just randomly happens with the router and it starts "lagging", any WiFi or direct cable connection to the router has a 5 second delay.
It may be that some buffer is getting overloaded on the router but I'm just randomly guessing at this point. It's in a well ventilated place and it doesn't feel hot to the touch.

When i called them they said it's a hardware warranty issue and that i should bring it into the manufacturer's repair shop.

I know less about routers than you do for sure, so correct me if my assumption is wrong; but this feels like a possible HW/SW issue rather than an ISP issue, I'm just wondering which one of those it is.
Next time i get the issue instead of rebooting the router I'll try to completely unplug the modem from the router to see if the delay still exists.

Anything is possible. It's recommended to by pass the router and test directly with the ISP modem in any case where you seem to have problems. Troubleshooting is where you need to narrow down where the problem is and isolate the problem to identify where the problem is, ISP, Modem or external router or PC issue.

Start by turning OFF ALL wireless and wired devices accept for one wired PC. Test with out the router and then with the router.

Other areas that can cause problems ca be environment and wireless interferences. Reason for asking about any wireless nieghbours question. Please give feedback regarding this. Also bad cabling can be a problem as well.

I do recommend getting into a newer model DIR series router. The DIR-600 is fairly old now and probably wont be much if any more updates. Its been phased out here in the NA region. If you'd like a recommendation on a different model, please let us know.

Okay, i'll try it next time the router starts lagging again, i'll plug my computer directly into the modem without rebooting the router.

I don't think cabling could be an issue, since both wired and wireless connections to the router start lagging, and the connection works perfectly most of the day, so i figured if it was a hardware problem it'd be constantly bad.

Thanks for the info either way

It's really weird.

My ping to google went up to 500 just watchin***outube video.

I plugged my computer directly into the modem, and the video worked fine.

I also did a speed test before and after, and it seems like my connection is 1/3 as fast download-wise while connecting via the router. I turned off WIFI on all devices, i only connected to the internet on my main PC in both cases.

Is SPI enabled?

You could try a manual re-load of FW, factory reset, load FW, factory reset then set up from scratch.
Clear the browser cache before and after loading the FW file.

I'd take the unit back to the ISP and have them check it out if it continues. Ask for something newer if possible.

Should i check for newer FW versions, or install something like openWRT?

If available...
If your going to return the unit to the ISP, I would not install OpenWRT on it.

Okay, thanks.

Do you think i can press the issue of returning it to the ISP, when their knee-jerk suggestion was to take it to the vendor's repair shop?

If the ISP sold the router to you, then they need to either take it back and give you a working unit, different model or refund your money and go find your own at a retail store or online.
