Title: Western Digital Hard Drives
Post by: michaelm on July 17, 2009, 02:43:11 PM
I have four of the Western Digital Caviar SE16 500 GB WD5000AAKS SATA-II hard drives that I want to use configured in the DNS-343 as a RAID 5. I have read that when using non-enterprise (not RE) Western Digital drives in other servers with a RAID array, there is a need to Enable Time-Limited Error Recovery (TLER) in the drive to put a limit on the error recovery time from a read or write error due to a bad sector. Otherwise the RAID controller drops the hard disk from the array thinking that it has failed any time that the hard drive takes too long to recover.

Is this a potential issue / problem with the DNS-343?
What is the timeout period before a drive is dropped from the array?
Anyone been successful using this type of WD drive or do I need RAID specific drives?

Thanks in advance for your help...

Hi,

I have exactly the same drives, and have been trying to also do the same RAID 5 setup, but have been plagued with network path errors. Did you get anywhere with these options?

Regards,

Oliver

What firmware are you running?
