Title: DIR-860L high latency / very slow connection times at random
Post by: Wouter on October 04, 2016, 01:01:46 PM
Hi,

So I recently bought this router and I absolutely love the design. It usually works fine for regular web browsing, however from time to time it really suffers from high latency, connection drops etc. It advertises with 800Mbps speed, in real life I get around 300 average, which more than good enough for my 100Mbps connection.

But for some reason, basic things like Youtube videos (720p) don't play/buffer enough, can't play Netflix without interruptions, .. Whilst my previous ugly (TP-Link) router did a fine job at these things. It has the same specs and I was using the same internet connection.

Is there anyone with similar issues? Is there a way to fix this?

Speedtest itself gives good results. Sometimes it takes a while before it starts, but it does report a low ping. It's like the connection time is just slow.
And I can not reproduce it 10/10 times, it's just at random times it has trouble connecting to hosts.

Does this happen if you test on a wired LAN cable connection?

How far away is the wireless device from the router when testing?

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

With a lan cable it was fine.

I tried factory reset, reflashing the latest firmware, changed few settings in all possible combinations but without any luck.
In the end, the only thing that did work for me was by installing unofficial DD-WRT firmware.

Now I always have low ping, instant connections very fast speeds.

Glad you got it working better. Enjoy.  ;)
