Title: Low visibility at night
Post by: AlxMrx on October 11, 2016, 03:43:42 AM
Hello, I've just bought a brand new DCS-5222L rev. B and it works flawlessly.
Problem is, since I've installed it indoor in my living room, at night with no lights on the visibility is really really poor and low.
As you can see here: http://puu.sh/rF98H/8eb1ca4e4a.png (http://puu.sh/rF98H/8eb1ca4e4a.png) a big portion of my living room is dark compared to daylight: http://puu.sh/rF9b1/eb15d7d8c5.png (http://puu.sh/rF9b1/eb15d7d8c5.png)

Is this normal? Thank you

Probably not.  Can you see the red IR lights? Do they look dim or off? Which F/W is installed?

Can you post a picture capture of what it looks like at night with the IR enabled?

There are two links in my first post with the images.

Here is a picture during daytime:

Consider that the distance from the camera to the wall on the other side (behind the stairs) is around 11-12 meters. It seems like the IR is covering an area that is 5 or 6 meters.

Seems a bit low to me. I get much more visibility with my 933L.  :-X
I wonder if regressing to a prior version of FW may show a difference?

They may not be on fully.

You've confirmed in the f/w they are set to on?

They are on! As you can see in the picture below..

Now I've noticed in the control panel there is a voice saying "IR Light Control" that was set to medium; I've switched it on highest and I'll see if something will change tonight

Let us know how it goes...

I thought ir light control was for the sensitivity level when they come on. Maybe that is confusion on my part?

I'll have to check that out. I hope I don't get egg on my face on this one.

IR needs to bounce off something. Aim for a wall and see it it works better than making the carpet the center focal point.

THere's plenty of light reflection sources in his place that the light should be good. I have a similar living room area and IR doesn't bounce off the walls.

The use posted that there was a additional IR intensity settings that he found and will report back his findings after changing them. This seems to be a IR emitter intensity issue here.

I have so many cams and IR flying all over the place here...  ::)

OK, I tested with my 2330L with 1.12 F/W... put in room with no other IR... IR Light Control on Low/High - I saw a difference in image.
But OFF is OFF.. with 1.14 F/W - there is the leakage with "OFF".

My 5222LB - older F/W --> Firmware Version : 2.01

I turned IR light control lower, and the IR's dimmed compared to HIGH...

I had always accepted dlink default (medium)... as it generally worked fine everywhere...

Seems to be a little bit better now, but I think the light is still too low on the other side of the room. What is the maximum distance the cam can illuminate at night?

Should I buy an extra IR illuminator?

Generally 15ft

Ya you could buy extra illumination for those dark corners. Seems that the brightness is a bit better. Maybe the shape of this room and how you have the camera placed and and the farthest distance maybe a factor here.

Some more cameras would help too  :o

What I was thinking too. Maybe one in each corner...

I have one of these cameras and the problem is they just do not have adequate IR lights as compared to other models.  I bought a low cost separate IR light.  It easily lights up the whole room and makes the camera useful at night.

Do you have a link and brand info for this separate external IR light?

This is the one I bought: https://www.amazon.com/Sonline-Illuminator-Infrared-Vision-Security/dp/B00YTWRU4Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1476463355&sr=8-1
