Can you cancel the up date and continue thru to the menu and stream some video or something?
Can you check the network connection in the settings to make sure the DSM is connected to the router?
How is the DSM connected? wireless or wired? Wired could be preferred. Swap out lan cables to be sure.

I tried wired and wireless, currently on wired. It will stream youtube, netflix, etc just fine but after a while of playing it pops up to tell me there is a firmware update which then fails.

Ok, if your getting streaming with the DSM thru your main host router. I presume thats working.

There maybe a FW update server that the DSM connects to that isn't working or something in the update that is not working right. There maybe an issue here. I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.
