According to a lot of news sites I've been following, 802.11 draft n will soon lose its draft designation, likely this September. So will there be a firmware update to update our DIR-655 to final n standard or will we have to buy new product?

I can only hope that it will come via a firmware update which will probably take another 3+ revisions to get right ;D

The final N version will not differ that much from the current draft version, so an update is not really critical.

Being one who also works in the field, I'm familiar with this standard. But as long as there're differences between the broadcaster and the receivers there's higher chances for incompatibilities. Heck, even if they're certified wi-fi product, you can't be sure they will work well together. So I was asking, whether there'll be a firmware update for the finalized n standard for DIR-655 router, NOT whether an update will be important or not. If it were a test, I would have to give you zero point for that answer.

Q: Will products coming on the market now be upgradeable to the final standard?
A: While no company can guarantee that products now based on the draft 802.11n d2.0 specification will be compatible or upgradeable with the ratified standard, Atheros believes that there is very high probability that this will be so. For Atheros XSPAN chipsets, the changes to the specification from draft 1.0 to draft 2.0 were modest and achieved through firmware upgrades.
Atheros has stated her stand. If the upgrade(from 2.0 to final) can be done through firmware, people need not spend extra money and both Dlink and Atheros earn less.

Nevertheless you will buy new stuff because it is faster, with huge displays and music and and and ...
And because you're curious ... ;D
There is no reason why they will not be able to update the devices. There are inly minor changes.
Even the draft 2 will work with final N products, so even without update you don't need to throw it from the roof.
