Hi,
I noticed today that my little blue light was not illuminating my room. When I tried to turn it on, it tried for half a second, then died again. I removed the drives, but same problem. I moved the unit to a different electrical socket, and tried holding the reset button as I powered it on. It came on for a little bit longer, but then died again. And I smelled a bit of smoke. It was on a power bar along with my computer, and no other units seemed to fail. The power supply seemed to be working with a green light when it's plugged into the wall.
I had firmware 1.08 installed with no extra addons. I've got hardware version B1, serial number p1uj184000164. Is this still on warranty? I bought it around March 2009. Any other suggestions to troubleshoot?

It's generally a one year warranty - March '09, you should be covered.

Excellent. My refurbished unit is on its way back to me.
I'm not sure what firmware and such will be on it. Am i safe to assume that if I upgrade the firmware to 1.08, and then put in my drives they won't be magically formatted or anything?
Thanks

No they will not be formatted just update the firmware to the firmware you had previously reset the unit to factory defaults power it down and insert the drives and power it back up.
