Title: Little help setup/speed
Post by: mrshowfan on July 30, 2009, 08:43:30 PM
So,

I just moved and I'm having trouble with the 825. I'm not using the laptop I normally use which is new, but rather, an older one that my fiance used. Its an Averatec laptop that runs XP (sp2). Internet works fine with a direct hard wired CAT 5 connection to the laptop (100Mbps). The router though seems to be slow. I have an 802.11 g wireless adapter, so I understand that I'm not going to get the 5Ghz frequency, but the 2.4Ghz is really slow (5 down, 3 up) and I have it less than 2 or 3 ft away from the laptop.  I'm probably missing some simple setup item, but have come to the experts. Any help would be awesome.

Wireless networking is not affected by either the 2.4Ghz or 5.0Ghz radio band.  It is controlled by the wireless network adapter, which for you is limited to 54MB/s (802.11G.)  Wireless 802.11G wireless networking will give upto 54MB/s communication speeds.

Thanks! Well, I reinstalled today (the old helpdesk trick) and have everything up and running. Sadly at 54Mbps. I cant wait for my other computer to get here. I do appreciate the help.

I think also yesterday I had the security setting at WPA but the laptop is so old it can only handle WEP. I think that also added confusion to the problem. After a while yesterday I wasnt even able to log onto my network without the "network password binary/hex error" coming up.

Oh well. Lessons learned.

Thanks again!
