So im thinking of buying a DGL-4500 router upgrading from my Dir-655 but I want to know if it is worth it?? Does the DGL-4500 have the problem fixed where it resets itself when theres too much load and all that?? Are there ways to fix it so it doesnt do that?? I want to know before I buy one!

DO NOT buy a DGL-4500. Too many problems with the firmware and hardware will make you wish you had purchased something else. You're much better off with your current router or buying a DIR-855.

Yeah - This router used to be fantastic, but if It's got 1.20NA or higher, yer out of luck.... and your cash.. I'd hold off on upgrading until they fix this fiasco...

I agree with all the above posts. It is not worth the aggravation. If in doubt, read all the posts in this forum and make up you own mind. That way you will only have yourself to blame if you buy one.
I wish I had done more research before getting mine.

keeping this thread alive in support of the D-Link DGL-4500 is a nothing but a piece of crap.. Not to mention D-Link support is none existent. It truly amazes me how a company can stay afloat with such lame customer support as D-Link. With all the problems surrounding the issues the DGL-4500 has you'd think there would be a bunch of threads with tech support piping in with help. Nope.. Or even better a recall or discontinuation of this none functioning router.
Very disappointed. >:(

There an issue with your unit Corpus? Have you posted your issues here so WE might try and help you out? We've had good luck in helping others with there issues. Please let us know.

Wow three is no issues with this router at all, I have not yet stumble upon a issue with it. Everything is running perfect in my end and many users will agree with me. There is no need to be aggressive. Like FurryNutz stated above me, post your issues and we will try our best to resolve those issues or help you out with them. Remember that's what forums are for so us users can assist each other. Have a great day.

Nahh man, I have dealt with Dlink support. I know what you mean. But its like any call center, the people who are good at their job don't stick around long, they move into higher paying positions. That leaves entry level pretty green most of the time. Take that with a lack of training, lack of pay, and a mind set that focuses on Adverage Call Time (AHT) more then Call Quality, its no wonder most technical support is bad.
Forums are different because we have as much time as we want to post, we don't have to fallow any rules, and we don't get paid so....wait..:::laugh:: Well I guess that part doesnt fit, but you know what I mean.

::chuckle:: No thanks. Just think of us as Technical Support Ronin. Loyal to no one but those we decide to give allegiance. I don't want any more responsibility. I do think D-link could put more money into their online support function. Some of the emulators can be used to make configuration files. That would give a whole new layer of ability to us. Also, the ability of uses to upload files, a chat system, and a escalation system where we could send more complicated issues to SME's would be great. Doabt it will ever happen though.

Chat capabilities in forums can be very valuable. I know I have benefited from Bitdefenders Live Technical Help. Log in and chat live with technical support. What a great service. Which I actually have to do next. I just up graded to Bitdefenders new Internet Security 2011. I am finding it very sluggish. There are a bunch of new features as seemingly every new release from them. I am finding Bitdefender to be (Bloatware) now a days.
How about you guys, any suggestions on (light) antivirus / firewall software.

I recommend Symantec Corp Edition AV. and If you must Internet Security with Firewall. However I do recommend only using AV. If you have the 4500 set up well and have Firewall on. There really no need for Software based firewalls. I've been running with out for years. I would only recommend software firewall if you really need it, have a network that requires it or have security needs. However user preference!
Reason being is that it's less one thing to have to trouble shoot should something arise and it's less TSR program taking up system resources. Most AV and FWs are bloatware and hate it. But it's a necessary evil. I run Norton AV and Spy Bot on my systems and been safe and clean thus far. My 2 cents.

I agree that you can leave out Software Firewall. Anyone that wants in on your system will laugh at any commercially available firewall, and most bots and randoms will be stopped by the SPI and firewall on your router. I cant agree on Symantec though, not even Corp Edition. While I agree its the lone star in the HORIBLE line up that is the Norton line, if your trying to get away from bloat, stay away from Norton.
As for what to use, I have used Avast Free both proffesionally and privately for a while now. They offer a boot scan, decent heuristics(best in the free catagory) schedualed scans, and no pesky firewall. The most common complaint is that it makes a noise while it updates. But you can litterly turn that off in 5 seconds.
Now if you can spend money, and to compare apples to apples, check out ESET's NOD32. Hands down best heuristics(the ability to find a unknown infection) and also a very small foot print. This is seriously one bad ass AV.
As a alternative, and one of the few good AV you can buy in a store, check out Kaspersky. If you want a firewall integrated into it, this is the way to go. One of the few I didn't have issues with. Very controllable, but takes some tinkering.
As with anything though, do your own research. Some good places to check out is Bleepingcomputer.com, CNET and Tom's Hardware for reviews.

Hey guys thought I drop back in and say hi as I enjoyed meeting and chatting with you guys. Thanks for the info on the AV and firewall I did however get my Bitdefender working good again. I do how ever like when Bitdefender tells me it stopped a port scan. I don't know really to much about this stuff as I just turn on stuff and game mainly.
Anyway I will be dropping time to time to read what you guys are up too.

What kind of input are you looking for? Make it better or worse? Right now the lastest FW version released is v1.23 and it's no longer beta. We never saw a beta of this release. V1.21 was the last I saw of beta which was released in v1.22 which fixed several issues. There is a threat in the Beta code for the 4500 section on this forum if you'd like to post or review what others have found.
