Title: On demand Connection not working for Lan Ports
Post by: illusion on August 01, 2009, 08:13:49 PM
Hi Guys

I tried searching this forum and I really did not find what i was looking for. I live in a Area where broadband bandwith is limited . However we do get Happy Hours but again that is between 2 Am to 8 Am  :-\ . So my only option is to schedule my torrents in utorrents and use a autowakeup software which automatically switches on/off my machine at prescribed times. I would further set the connection to ondemand using ppoe. Recently however my desktop USB Wireless conked off, so I decided to shift my router next to my PC and connected the router using a lan cable. Everything works fine . The router connects to the net "on demand" . However it does not disconnect when the computer shuts down. As a result I end up wasting a lot of bandwith as the connection becomes chargeable as soon s the 8 AM cut off is reached. My idle time has been set to "one minute".  Only my desktop remains on during those timings . This started happening only when I started using the lan port of the router. If all pc's connect via wireless the router connects/disconnects fine . Is it that the "ondemand" connection does not work for LAN ports ? Please help.  :(

Router F/W version : 1.21 . I am willing to switch to 1.32 only if it will solve the problem.

Create a schedule then go to access control and deny all access for your PC'c IP using that schedule.

Thanks for your reply Kev. Thats a good idea.

You mean the schedule will start from 8 AM onwards ?

Any guidance on how to create such a schedule ?

Schedules
Schedules can be created for use with enforcing rules. For example, if you want to restrict web access to Mon-Fri from 3pm to 8pm, you could create a schedule selecting Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, and Fri and enter a Start Time of 3pm and End Time of 8pm.

Add/Update Schedule Rule
In this section you can add entries to the Schedule Rules List below or edit existing entries.
Name
Give the schedule a name that is meaningful to you, such as "Weekday rule".
Day(s)
Place a checkmark in the boxes for the desired days or select the All Week radio button to select all seven days of the week.
All Day - 24 hrs
Select this option if you want this schedule in effect all day for the selected day(s).
Start Time
If you don't use the All Day option, then you enter the time here. The start time is entered in two fields. The first box is for the hour and the second box is for the minute. Email events are normally triggered only by the start time.
End Time
The end time is entered in the same format as the start time. The hour in the first box and the minutes in the second box. The end time is used for most other rules, but is not normally used for email events.
Save
Saves the new or edited Schedule Rule.
Schedule Rules List
This section shows the currently defined Schedule Rules. A Schedule Rule can be changed by clicking the Edit icon, or deleted by clicking the Delete icon. When you click the Edit icon, the item is highlighted, and the "Edit Schedule Rule" section is activated for editing.

The "Support Menu" on the router setup page dose wonders! ;)

Thanks for all your help guys .  I will retry creating schedules in my Dir 655 and let you know. Last time I kept getting this error 'Invalid Time' when I tried creating a schedule . Any idea as to what could I be doing wrong here ?

You could make sure you have your time sync setup on your router.

But hey I make mistakes all the time, could be as simple as a typo, am instead of pm.

Funny ! Creating schedules is a workaround to the problem. Why did D-Link not make such a simple feature applicable to LAN Ports also. But I guess no cribbing and making the best of what I have . I really don't want to upgrade my firmware as current F/W 1.21 has been working all right for me for a few months now and 1.32 NA thread has had mixed responses to the upgrade. I guess I am the play it safe types.

I don't know of any Home Router that has a feature to control Lan Ports. It's always MAC address or Lan IP's. So I'm sure many on this forum dose not consider "Creating schedules is a workaround to the problem" a valid statement. No matter how you get done what your talking about a schedule is involved.
As far as the firmware is concerned FW1.32NA is stable, the only problem is Shareport and DNS Relay. If I'm not mistaken the same issue with DNS exist in FW1.21 also.

This SOHO class of router have an unmanaged switch. For managed switches you need to pay a tiny bit more. 8)
