Title: Problems with Seagate 1.5 TB drives and the DNS-323
Post by: sfoster4 on August 02, 2009, 04:50:50 PM
I had asked this question a month or two ago and I have not received an answer.  The issues has also been deleted so I guess I will ask again.  This question is directed to D-Link Engineering/Support.

I have a DNS-323 that appears to "freeze" periodically when it is being accessed by either a PC or my Popcorn Hour Media player.  This DNS-323 is one of the very original  units, it was purchased when the product came out.  The "freezing" began when I upgraded the hard drives from WD 500 GB drives to Seagate 1.5 TB drives.

I also have a DNS-323 that is just a few months old.  I transferred the Seagate drives to the new DNS-323 and it  works perfectly.  Both DNS units are running 1.08 firmware.

Could this be an engineering difference between the units?

Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you.

Just wanted to add that I also have 2 of those same 1.5TB drives in my DNS-323 and I have run into a few problems. Basically some various, erratic behavior (especially when I try to set it to RAID 1). Hopefully v1.08 will address this in a stable build.

BTW - Just read on this forum that the DNS-323 is a fairly OLD product. Had I known this, I would never have bought it.........................

Sorry for not answering directly, just thought I'd add that I too, was experiencing this.

I recently purchased a dns-323 for my screenplay pro hd player and put Seagate 1.5 tb drives in both bays for a total of 3 gigs and I have had no problems what so ever! I updated my device from the firmware 1.5 to 1.7 and it works great. At first, I was having problems with other issues with it disconnecting periodically, but I figured out what that was and it cleared up after the 1.7 firmware.

I might suggest that you update your firmware to the 1.7, as I have no problems at all streaming media or copying the data from the dns to my computer.

So, are you sure it's your dns that's freezing or could it be the popcorn hour compatibility from the dns? To make sure, view the same files from a computer connected to the network and see if the issues persist. It could also be the data line, router..number of things like over heating..

I suppose I could go back from 1.08 to 1.07

The same thing happens with a pc.  The only difference is that one DNS works correctly (the newer one) and one does not (the original)

I have a dns-323 and dns-321 running two 1.5T seagate drives in a raid 1 configuration.  I am also using a popcorn hour A100 with no problems.  The only problem I'm having is that I am running the netowork through a power line adapter and it's too slow for HD movies, but good enough for SD movies.
